My condolence to the King family on your loss. His music touched our family deeply in the 1960's. My uncles would sit with us children at the time and cover his songs. I particularly loved Wolverton Moutain, which I still play to this day. God bless him.
Duane and Family,
Your dad will always live on in all of our memories. His music and what he meant to our community is legendary. I am proud to have been your neighbor when we were growing up in the Woodlawn area. And your friend throughout life. Love to you and yours.
Barbara and Boys,
I wish I had known about Claude's passing as I would have been there with you. He was a great man and a wonderful friend to me. I will always treasure my memories of our times together in the studio, on the road, visiting him there, and our phone conversations.
God will give you the strength to get past this lost but you will never get over it as his memories live on in your hearts and minds. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Love, Howard
Dear Barbara and family,
I'm praying for friends to comfort you, faith to uphold you and loving memories to help you smile again.
My walking dreams often brings me in the empty auditoriums left dusty since decades, then I stroll behind the velvet curtain to look on backstage area. Sometime there's an unknow or a celeb standing there, a real old man, holding a guitar. If the guy like we talk about the old days and try together to put all the various pieces of the puzzle of its life and time. If he rather like to stay silent, being tired by years, it doesn't not matter 'cause I still had in head the last chord of the song he was singing all alone before I come in.
Claude was one of these precious friends who loaned me the auditorium's key and helped me to make that world a better place with my ballpen. Music is a gift of God and a strong weapon for love!
I was sorry to hear of Claude King's
recent passing and I send my prayers
& love to all his family members for
their great loss.
Hes probably already playing his music
and has everyone smiling just as he did
for everyone of us left behind.
May God protect & watch over his family
members as Claude would want that for sure. God bless them all.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the King family.
From the beautiful music I first heard in Cedar Grove in the early 60's to the songs still being played, only now we hear them straight from Heaven. We were all so blessed.
Tribute song for Claude King:
Wolverton Mountain Man (Larry W Jones 03/20/2013) (song#6679)
Well, I was just a young lad going with the flow
When I first heard Claude King sing on the radio
I was at a soda fountain in Louisian
Listnin' 'bout a big bad Wolverton Mountain man
Now, old man Clowers made good hard liquor brandy
With a gun and a knife he was mighty handy
He had a pretty young daughter with raven hair
But Wolverton bears and birds protected her there
Now I'm an older man and time goes marching on
And it was in March when I heard Claude King was gone
I wonder if he ever kissed Clifton's daughter's sweet lips
Or if he married that girl on one of his trips
I know Claude King climbed up on Wolverton Mountain
Cause all of his dreams were with that young girl he loved
He took his chances up on Wolverton Mountain
It was too lonesome down below than up above
Well, I was just a young lad going with the flow
When I first heard Claude King sing on the radio
Up on that Wolverton Mountain he loved her so
Thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. King's family!
Barbara, Jay, Brad and Duane, I am so sorry to hear of Claude's passing. He was such a kind, humble man and very much a father figure to my ex-husband David. I always smile when I hear Wolverton Mountain on the radio and picture Claude and the Nashville Knights performing it in my mind. That was so long ago, but seems like yesterday. May God wrap his arms around you during this difficult time and give you comfort.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jay King a couple of years ago (from the local band Innuendo)& I was so excited to know he was Claude King's son. Brought back alot of good memories of my mom & dad's 45 rpm record that was played over and over at my house. I am so sorry Jay & the rest of the family. Claude King had a long, wonderful life with you & it will be hard for his presence to be gone. His music will live on all over the world though. He will never be forgotten. RIP Mr. King.
My condolences to the King family at the passing of Mr. King. I take my walks by his house and many times I wanted to stop in and meet him in person. When I built my house I was going to get Tillman Franks to ask Mr. King to come down and the three of us break in my house with some old-fashioned jamming.

One of the best voices that God ever created. He was the best and will be missed by all.
I was on a trip in Arkansas in 1962 and it was my favorite song. I'll miss him.
Claude King was a great singer/songwriter. His song "wolverton MT" was a favorite of mine & my daughter, was singing that song before she could pronounce all the words; but she Could carry the tune. We were riding a Greyhound from New Haven, Ct to Nashville,Tn and she entertained the other riders with her repeated singing of this song. She could not pronounce the word Wolverton, but she could tell you the singer's name. That in itself got her lots of attention, since she was so young.
Go rest high on that mountain Claude; We Country music lovers will surely miss you.
The Best Man that ever lived on this earth..
I always loved that song. It reminds me of when I was kid riding my bike. Nothing but good memories. I am so sad to hear about his passing. My prayers are with the family. May God Bless
As a young boy growing up in
Cleveland, Ohio, we didn't hear
A lot of 'country style' music on
top40 radio (whatever that is).
Mr. King came out with "Woolverton Mt." and not just a
Country hit, but a huge crossover hit as well. If my memory is correct, I saw him on Dick Clark's American Bandstand, also. Thank you, my
friend, for your U.S. Navy service. My prayers are with your family.
I was saddened to learn of Claude's death. My prayers are with you.
Claude was an original, he entertained us for many years. The average Joe can't get by Wolverton Mountain, but he had many other songs. He is now with Johnny Horton and they talking about where they will fish tomorrow. Tommy Chelette, Pascagoula, MS>
RIP Claude, and I don't care about
Clifton Clowers either!
Barbara and family I'm so sorry to hear of Claude's passing. Even though I'm far away he has been on my mind many times. I'm really thankful I got to come home to Shreveport and see him a few years ago. The Claude King stories will live on about the fishing trips in Canada and all the good times we got to spend. May God bless the family and thanks for the memories. Paul Brown Henderson North Carolina

My family lived in Shreveport from 1960 until 1970. My dad took me to see Mr. King perform when I was a very young girl. It was a great evening and a wonderful childhood memory~~
As I was about to lay the old thunderbird bass down for good,I had only one regret. I had never gone on the road in a tour bus. Then Mr. Claude King called, and I proceeded to have the coolest year of my life. Thanks Claude.
I lived on Wolverton Mountain and enjoyed singing his song so much. I went to church with Clifton Clowers. So sorry for your loss. Gods blessings.

Mr. King was one of those people that lit up a room simply by walking into it. I consider the day I met him as one of the greatest days of my life. I got a record player for Christmas in 1962. I imediately went and bought "Wolverton Mountain" and "Walk on By" by Leroy Van Dyke, Who Mr. King told me was a good friend of his. He will be missed. May God bless you as you go through your loss.

My condolences to the King family. I loved Claude King's music and listed to it not only growing up but still now as an older adult. That was great talent you had there, and thanks for using it so well.
My deceased mother really enjoyed your songs. Your songs were her favorite.
Am so sorry to hear of mr. King passing away. My husband and I so enoyed his music way back when we were dating and listening to
Mountain. Thanks forever for the memories.
I just read about the death of Claude King and couldn't help but shed some tears. I never had the pleasure of meeting him, but his music will always live in my heart. My story begins when I was a very shy junior with a secret crush on a popular senior named Clifton. He was a year older and we barely knew each other, and I really didn't think he had ever given much notice to me. But while I was talking with a group of girls at our 1962 Junior/Senior Prom, Clifton walked over and asked me for a dance. I was thrilled when he asked, then I became very nervous when a new song began to play that I had never before heard. He told me it was "Wolverton Mountain" and confessed that he had asked the DJ to play it because it was his favorite song. Clifton and I married the following year and we had four beautiful daughters of our own and spent 48 wonderful years together before cancer took him from me in 2010. But we always loved Claude King's music because he was the one who sang our song. God bless you my dear friend; and I hope you enjoy meeting my Clifton.
Go rest high on Woolverton Mountain.Another one of the best gone home.Prayers go out to the families.
My condolences to Mr. kings family. I grew up listening to his music, Wolverton Mountain being an all time favorite, it always brings back memories. God bless you sir.

I will forever remember your music.
Mr. King's rich singing voice will now echo through heaven as it did on earth. Thanks for the music. A long-time fan,

I downloaded Wolverton Mt for a terminally man in hospice. He and I sang it together. He knew every word and it brought both he and I much pleasure that day. So thank you Mr King...you brought happiness you were not aware of.
Jay I have known you since JR.high at Linwood and knew the family too, My heart goes out to you and family. You had a wonderful father and mother.I love you like family and if you need me call me. You use to knock on my door with your drum sticks and use to practice in my carport.
May your light shine on us forever and god bless you and your family on this sad day. Our prayers are with you. I know you are singing your heart out with the Attaway's and King's.
I'm sorry to hear of Mr. King's passing. My mother was a Woolverton from Woolverton Mt. and Clifton Clowers was a real person, though not what the song depicted. You can read more about the Woolvertons on the Woolverton FB page. (spelling was changed for the song but both spellings go back to same ancestors).
Your music will be missed - B Lamey (TX)
R.I.P.,Mr. King.Prayers to you and your family and friends.I also loved the song Woolverton Mountain,I'll never will forget that song. All of your music was good.

Claude King - A star on the Shreveport "Walk of Stars”. He could sing country with originality like no other could. Thanks for all the fun on the radio. "On Woolverton Mountain" takes me back, and Claude's version of “The House of the Rising Sun” is great. Thanks Claude!
I loved his music when I was young
The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Claude King our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Claude. And to Claude it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during WW-II while serving in the U.S. Navy. Claude, you are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

The world will be a lot sadder without this giant in it. It is hard to travel thru this world and not make an enemy, but here was a man who accomplished this. I never really knew him, but as a teenager, me and my sister would ride the city bus every Saturday to town of Shreveport, and his cousin was the driver, that is how I found out about his singing,,I love Woverton Mountain song, and remember the bus driving days in the 60's. My heart goes out to all family and friends. after reading the Obit, I knew he would have been a great family man. God bless you all.
If someone had asked me what other songs Claude King was responsible for making a hit with besides "Wolverton Mountain", I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to answer it. That one left an indelible mark on my life, and brings a smile to my heart every time I get to hear it. Claude, you lived a long and eventful life...90 years young, 67 of them married to one woman, and loving children. It gets no better than that. Go rest easy on that mountain, sir. May the Good Lord forever hold you in the palm of His hand.

I know everyone will miss his music, but most of all I'll miss my friend.

My Grandfather sat us upon his knee as young children and sang Wolverton Mountain! He would tell us he knew Clifton Clowers and he, himself, was raised on Wolverton Mountain. My great-grandmother is buried there. Claude King gave us wonderful stories written to music -- never to be forgotten by so many! I'm 54 and I met Clifton Clowers at his home on Wolverton Mountain when I was 10...I was afraid! But he was a nice man and so was Mr. King I've read! Peace be with Barbara, sons and family. You were the lucky ones!
He had A Beautiful Voice & while we'll still hear his songs here...Heaven's Hearing Him sing up there. I look forward to meeting him one day and also hearing him sing in Heaven! May God's Comfort be upon his Family! You're in my Prayers! ?
Thanks for the memories...

So happy to hear that Claude King lived to be 90 and also have his wife with him.
Memories go back to when the song "Wolverton Mountain came out... My Dad was so elated about it since he was born on that mountain in Ark. and grew up with Clifton Clowers. To prove that, he had Clifton Clowers send a Post Card to each family of his saying that they knew each other - and bought the record.
Just this summer, while passing through the Ozarks, I went up to the mountain to find the cemetery where my grandmother is buried. There I also found the grave of Clifton Clowers along with his wife, Esther. Thank you Claude King for a memorable song.
At 83 I still love to listen to my Claude King records - (45 rpm)...... My sympathy to your family ..... you have given me some beautiful memories and I thank you.
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

I have so many happy memories of Claude King's music. Hearing it on the radio and hearing my Dear Daddy sing it. Many years ago Daddy got an audition for the Louisiana Hayride singing over the telephone. Yep he was that good! But he didn't pursue it because he was afraid to leave a steady job that took care of his family. I've always been so proud of that anyway. He sang all the old songs. Claude King, Johnny Horton and Stonewall Jackson. I miss you all but you will live forever through your music. Sending much Love and Prayers to the King family from Judy in Georgia.
We'll miss you !

Growing up in the late '50s & '60s as a 'rock 'n roller' Wolverton Mountain nonetheless was a favorite as it crossed over to the Top 40 playlists. Had that song in my mind just the other day, in fact. The lyrics always played out a fascinating visual story to me and I liked the melody, too. Great journey, Claude King. May you rest in eternal peace and be loved and remembered forever.
HE Will Raise You Up On Eagle's Wings,
Bear You On The Breath Of Dawn,
Make You To Shine Like The Sun,
And Hold You In The Palm Of HIS HAND.
