I was very saddened to learn of the recent passing of Coach Jim Whitley. My brother, who is a Bakersfield resident called me to deliver the sad news. I wish to offer my sincerest condolences to the family of Coach Whitley. I was a member of the UCR Highlander football team in 1959 and 1960. I was a 17 year old kid from Shafter,CA, where I grew up, and had come to UCR to play for Coach Whitley. Many years later after he had retired, I learned that he had become the first Athletic Director and Chairman of the Physical Education Department at Cal State University Bakersfield and was there for many years. But, I had no idea that he and I both had the same roots in the San Joaquin Valley.

Coach Whitley was an exceptional leader. As a coach he was tough and taskmaster, but a kind human being. The Highlanders had two winning seasons the two years I played for Coach Whitley. I have very fond memories of those years. It's been over 50 years, but the memories of those games and practices are as vibrant today as though they happened just a few days ago. Coach Whitley was one of my first mentors. Goodness know that 17 year olds need that steady and decisive leadership that was Coach Whitley's.
In this difficult time of grief, the Whitley Family can take heart in knowing that Coach Whitley touched many of the lives of the young people with whom he came in contact over the years. I am one who will always treasure the memories that Coach Whitley created for me. His steady leadership provided the guidance I needed at a time I was so far away from home.
Again, please accept my condolences for your loss.
