Julie and I spent time together--lots of time. She visited at least 3x year and spent at least 2 weeks living with us. There were so many times this challenged me (has she re-arranged the silverware drawer again??!) but there were also special times that only the two of us shared. When the kids would finally lie down and Nik was still at work, we could have a cup of tea and just chat. Julie was always so beautifully attentive (which I am certain is what her students loved about her) and so intelligent. These talks, these memories I will always treasure. Four years ago when we moved her to NC to be closer to us, Nik and I had the awesome task (still not completed) to go through 150+ boxes that she had had in storage for 25+ years. Contained in these boxes were snapshots into her life and her personality--an organized hoarder and a lover of memories. But that is what I love most about her: her fascination with the smallest of treasures--who knew she had saved the placemat Nik had colored 40 years ago! We have been mourning her for a long time. Dementia had taken the Julie we all knew and imprisoned her into only a shell of herself. But still I will miss that shell....
