Wendell Henry Wood
Albion
Wendell Henry Wood, age 87, died peacefully Sunday October 25, 2015. He was born April 9, 1928 to Lawrence and Ila (Bunday) Wood. He grew up on the family farm in Sheridan Township, and graduated from Marshall High School. While in high school he was a starting member of the school's undefeated football team of 1945.
In 1946 he married the love of this life, Beverly Ann Daly of Bellevue, and they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in January. Wendell and Bev had two children, a daughter, Sharon (Robert) Haefele of Marshall and a son, Dr. Thomas Wood of Albion. He is survived by his wife, Bev, both Sharon and Tom, as well as two granddaughters, two great-granddaughters, two great-grandsons, three great-great-granddaughters, numerous cousins, in-laws, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Shirley (Berton) Williams.
Wendell was an outdoorsman at heart and loved farming, hunting, fishing, golf, and fast pitch softball. He was one of the founding members of the Rice Creek Softball Association and participated there for many years as a board member, player and coach. He was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Calhoun County Road Commission for most of his adult life until he retired in 1988. He was a member of Marshall Moose Lodge and the country music band the Rice Creek Ramblers for which he played guitar, banjo, and the "fiddle". He was a natural musician and could play most any instrument despite having never had a lesson.
Visitation with the family will be held at the Kempf Family Funeral Homes, Marshall Chapel, 723 US 27 North, on Wednesday October 28, 2015 from 4-7pm. A funeral service will be held Thursday October 29, 2015 at the funeral home at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the Eaton Community Palliative Care of Charlotte.
