Carl Ackmann
Carl E. Ackmann, 88, of Carlyle, Ill., born Aug. 5, 1925, in Wade Township, Ill., passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill.
Mr. Ackmann never outgrew the farmer in him and enjoyed taking trips to visit the farm. He was a 50 year member of Scott Lodge 79 and a member of the Ainad Shriners of Southern Illinois. Carl was an avid sports fan, who loved the Cardinals, Rams, Fighting Illini, NASCAR and Mater Dei Basketball. He also enjoyed playing golf and cutting grass at Carlyle Lake Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, nee Donnewald (Tierney) Ackmann, whom he married on Feb. 20, 1965, in Carlyle, Ill., and who died Oct. 13, 2000; his parents, William G. and Wilma, nee Bott, Ackmann; a son-in-law, Clyde E. Dorries; a sister, Lucille Trapp; and his in-laws, Bud Donnewald, Irene Donnewald Romo and husband Alfred, Jim Donnewald and wife Ruth and Bob Moore.
Surviving are his children, Patricia Dorries of Breese, Kathleen Hale and husband Dean of Champaign and James Tierney of Chicago; his grandchildren, Jeff Dorries and wife Jill, Christopher Dorries and wife Chris, Craig Dorries and wife Cami and Robert Ryan Hale; his great-grandchildren, Joshua, Elizabeth, Jason, Ellyn, Joelle, Connor, Carson and Cooper Dorries; a brother, Ed Ackmann of Carlyle; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Donnewald Moore of Memphis and Alvina Bergmann Donnewald of Carlyle; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations in memory of Mr. Ackmann are suggested to Shriner's Hospital for Children or to Mater Dei High School and will be received at the funeral home. Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting

Visitation: The family will greet friends from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at Zieren Day Funeral Home in Carlyle, Ill. The Masonic and Shriners service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Funeral: Private burial will take place at St. Marys Cemetery in Carlyle at a later date.
