Dear Anne and family,
So saddened by your loss. Please accept my sympathies. Such a beautiful memorial, sorry I couldn't stay to speak with you. You have a beautiful family.
A few years ago, Chief Betten and I were enrolled in the same colors/personality class. We were the only 2 "orange" personalities in the group. We were asked to group together by color to discuss our personality traits. I told John as an "orange" I usually found myself trying to find matching socks in the clean laundry basket before rushing out the door. John said something like....I have that beat! I'm digging through the dirty laundry trying to find matching socks to wear before rushing out the door. It was a memorable moment. My condolences to the Betten family. Heaven has gained a beautiful soul.
You will be missed
I remember Fred as a great team leader in high school and it carried on throughout his life. He made this world a better place. Can't say that about alot of people. RIP Fred!!!
Praying for peace and strength today.
"Love is immortal "....his love and integrity will continue to shine in each of you and future generations.
Anne & Family, Our deepest sympathy to you. We will always remember Fred from our days at QP and Dorchester. He was a Great guy! Kent&Debbie Larkin

I will surely miss "Officer Friendly". What a great guy!
Not since Andy Taylor, has there been a police officer as level headed, as fair minded, as competent, or as charming as Fred Betten. If he were the model for all public servants. the world would be a much better place.
My deepest sympathy to Anne and the kids.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Betten family. John was truly and inspiration. I'm proud to have known him, proud to have worked with him, and proud to call him friend. RIP brother, well deserved. FHPD - 136

Fred's love and devotion to his family was the only thing greater than his love for being a police officer. Yep. He was livin' the dream. It's a crying shame it was a short dream.
You and your family are in my prayers. His mission continues and I know he is one of Gods greatest treasures.
I met John working at Venture Stores in Fairmont City. He was a security guard/floor walker at that time. He was always right on top of the shoplifters. What an amazing co-worker and friend...who will truly be missed by everyone whose life he touched. RIP John
Well done, good and faithful servant!
Hey good looking. ...
You were truly the best. Love you and will miss your smile and hugs.
Chief Betten.. how I loved being in your class and enjoying your sense of humor. Your gone way to soon and if only god could of kept you here alittle longer on earth, because we still have alot that needs to be changed to make our communities safer. My prayers are with your family. You truly will be missed.
Years ago I had the pleasure of working with John at the Venture's store. I was at Colonel Days and he was security at the two stores. His kindness was that you only had dreams about. Over the years when I would have the encounter of running into him it was of that in the 80's. Time had not passed him by. You have lost a husband and a father but in your hearts he will always be there! My deepest sympathies!

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family...truly a great man has joined heaven's team. We hope you are comforted by the happiness and joy John brought to everyone who knew him. God bless. Love the Reineke family
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.
I was lucky to have known John for the past 30 years. We attended PTI at University of Illinois together in 1984 and then again ran into each other while attending the FBI National Academy in 2005. John told me three things that speak of the kind of man John was. He loves his family, he loves his department, and he is living the dream. If not for John I would not have been nearly as successful with the physical requirements at the FBINA. He pulled, pushed, and encouraged me right through the Yellow Brick Road. To his family and department you are in my thoughts and prayers. We are all very lucky to have known him. Chief St. Charles Missouri Police Department / Formerly Chief Bloomington Illinois Police Department.

Ann and family
We remember John “Fred” as such an all-around good guy. Back to our Queen of Peace days, you and John were such involved - dedicated parents. We had fun trying to organize and keep up with the athletic program and Dan and all the guys on the 2nd shift “fish fry team” made a friend in Fred as they all looked forward to their Friday night “guy time” in the fry house.
Then as you moved on to O'Fallon our son Greg, worked for 2 years in O'Fallon as a Community Service Officer. He knew John as a well-respected leader at the police station. Greg always commented on how John was always at work and his loyalty through his illness. John was a probably unaware of the “role model” and impact his actions were to so many.
Our thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
