Jerry Verba Obituary

Jerry Verba III

Jerry E. Verba, III, born June 9, 1957 at the age of 56 years old passed away peacefully with his sister at his side in Carmel, Calif., on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at 6:22 a.m.

He left this earth so suddenly, leaving his family and friends in shock and sorrow. He leaves a legacy of love, humor, honor and friendship.

Jerry was the son of the late Jerry (Babe) Verba and was raised by his late grandparents, Antionette and Jerry Verba from Madison, Ill. He lived his young life attending Madison Schools and was a great student, friend and an admirable athlete.

After graduation from Madison Senior High in 1975, Jerry enlisted in the Navy and made it his career for 25 years being stationed in Adak, Alaska, Misawa, Japan, Skaggs Island, just to name a few. He was a first class petty officer and focused on cryptology throughout his naval career. According to his many shipmates he was not only a great boss but a wonderful and funny person whom they considered a friend and each had great stories to tell of their boss.

Jerry is survived by his sons, Jonathan (Kristina) Verba of Chesapeake, Va., and Alexander Verba of Chesapeake, Va.; his uncle, Jim Verba of Pontoon Beach, Ill., Joyce Ousley of Granite City, Ill., his niece Kimry Bassett of St. George, Utah and his only sibling, Linda Verba Bassett of Carmel, Calif. He is also survived by many, many cousins whom he spent countless Sundays with to enjoy his weekly "Grandma's Sunday Dinner". He loved and missed those days and Jerry always cared deeply for each of his cousins (Deb, Ronnie, Kenneth, Nancy and Michele).

Jerry had literally hundreds and hundreds of friends from every walk of life and from all over the world. Many wrote to tell me what a wonderful, warm and funny man Jerry was and how giving he was to anyone who he came in contact with. He loved being the giver and never the taker. His love in life was to mountain climb and yearly he climbed Mount Whitney and Yellow Stone frequently, a course to play golf, a game of tennis and reading all the classics. He was a ranked member of the American Chess Association, a member of The Obsessive BackPackers Club and also a member of The Tidewater Tennis Club. While, very bright yet so unassuming, Jerry was a self-taught scholar who loved art, history, politics, and was curious of so many aspects of life and world history and current events.

He still had so many adventures ahead of him...it was amazing how much he looked forward to explore, experience and do. He was a great lover of life and there were never enough hours in the day for him to learn and consume those passions. In general, his wide spread curiosity about life was amazing, just like the man.

His second home was working for Dollar Tree Corporate as a assessment management specialist where he was employed for 18 years. He always told everyone that he loved it so much he never missed a day! He loved everyone who worked there and considered each of them a close personal friend from all the way up the ladder to all the way down the ladder. I know he will be missed by each of them, they brought as much love and light to is life as he did theirs.

While he loved to debate, even to the end and while many may have disagreed with him (particularly his sister) everyone always had great respect for him. He was a true leader, and had a very special gift of encouraging others to follow their dreams and be the person they were meant to be during this lifetime.

I was stationed with Jerry at Skaggs Island... He was such a like able guy and was impossible not to get along with ... He was a really good basketball player and we would play pickup games every once in a while ... I was shacked at his passing ... He will be sorely missed ... You have my sympathies ... Brother: I went to the hospital yesterday for my testing. All of your doctors stopped me and told me what a pleasure it was to meet you and what an interesting, intelligent and an exceptional man you were and they enjoyed meeting you. I then went to see your nurses on Garden West and they all miss you and think of you and what a gentleman you were to each of them...they loved when you called them Dear. A year has passed, they only met you shortly but said they will always remember you. That's the type of man you were. XOX Sis

It has been 5 long months since you left all of us...

On Monday, we went to the boat with 60 roses, 7 balloons and lots of love. We sang Happy Birthday, read some letters, spoke about you and your impact on all of us, but mostly how much we loved you and miss you.

The boys released you to the sea. The weather was perfect the water was calm. The 1st 3 dozen of roses slowly surrounded your boat as it was a beautiful scene. When the boys released the set of balloons they blew straight ahead over the boat and lingered for a few moments then another 2 phases of upward motions and lingering as we watched the slow moving balloons with our tear filled eyes, then the balloons took off towards the west, so we said they probably were going by Dollar Tree then heading west to Linda.

As we were heading towards the cars and still on the dock it rained for a few minutes so we took it as tears from heaven. Alex, said thanks Dad! Jonathan was walking up the ramp and a young kid was running to get out of the rain and knocked his phone from his pockets and we all watched the phone go into the water. Verbie said that you wanted a phone!

We went out to eat and celebrated your birthday and just YOU. It was a very moving day for all as we MISS YOU!!! Your boys are strong and you did a wonderful job with raising them to be perfect gentlemen. They will carrier your name with great pride and will continue to bring honor to you as this is how great their LOVE is for you. We all realized during this time that the hardest part of loving someone is saying goodbye but we all know this is only temporary until we meet again.

Happy Birthday Brother...everyone was out celebrating you and how much you meant to us. And NO...it was not at Denny's! And unlike you, the boys did not put Miss Linda on a budget...teehee

We little knew that morning
God was to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
in death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide,
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
and nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

Jerry from the Hebrew root Jeremy; from Jeremiah. "Appointed by Jehovah" someone who is very compatible; staying composed is important to him; enjoys the outdoors and its adventures; has compassion for others; serves a balance between opposing forces; his smile is always present and for everyone; he wants a good education for his loved ones; loves the challenge of the chase.

This truly reflected JERRY E. VERBA III

Dear Big Brother: Today you left us 2 months ago. We decided to have Pizza Pie and Jelly donuts in your honor. You are missed terribly from sea to shining sea. Today many told me they thought of you because it was beautiful in Chesapeake and it was your kinda day to be out and about for maybe a hike. We are all doing good so please do not worry about us. While we all love and miss you very much, we all count you as one of the biggest blessings in our lives. And please, watch over all of us who have loved you so very much...xox Sis

We have lost a quality member of our family much too soon. Jerry was a thinker and a jolly ole' soul - such a nice combination. While celebrating his life yet mourning the loss of life at such a young age, I am reminded to cherish each day that God so graciously gives each of us.

I pray for open arms welcoming him into Heaven so that we can be reunited there someday. Linda, trust God to provide what you need during this time. Love you, Cuz - sending hugs across the miles.

Even though it's been 30 years since Jerry and I were stationed together, his passing affected me deeply. You meet many people during a tour of duty in the military. Most of whom you'd be hard pressed to recall years later.

Jerry was not one of those. He and I were in "A" and "C" Schools at Corry Station together as well as NSGA Misawa, Japan. His infectious smile and wry wit will always be with me. He was a wonderful friend and shipmate. I want to extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends. We lost a good man. God bless.

It's still very hard for me to believe Jerry has left us, I wanted to believe he would beat this disease and be back at work but that just wasn't in God's plan. We had some fun times in the café discussing just about everything and I'm very thankful for those times. Jerry was so interesting to talk to just as Linda said so eloquently about her beloved brother. He tried to talk me into hiking with him sometime but that's just not my thing but I'm sure if it was it would have been an experience I would never have forgotten. I will miss you very much my friend, it was an honor to be your friend these past 7 or so years since I've known you here at Dollar Tree. Our deepest sympathy to Linda, Jonathan and Alex. Jerry left his mark on the world by the many, many lives that he touched that's for sure. I hope that Linda, Jonathan and Alex will take some comfort in knowing how many people truly called Jerry their friend. May God comfort each of you in your time of grief and may your grief be soon replaced by the memories that made Jerry the very special person that he truly was.

You will be missed by all Jerry. You were exactly what everyone said. ..loving, loyal, selfless, dedicated and many more. I am proud that I had the opportunity to work with him and call him a friend. Loved his stories about hiking and living on a boat. Those stories always intrigued me and he would just laugh and smile. RIP my friend. God Bless!
