Phil was a classmate and teammate and all around great guy. My sympathy to his family.

I also just heard of coach highsmith's passing. I am now a football coach and much of what i do with this generation of kids is inspired by what he and other coaches did for me. He made me a better person, and now i am able to pass on his gift. RIP Coach. Tom Haynes, class of 2001.

I am so sorry I know that I am hearing about this late but it is still hard to swallow. I use to go to his house when I was dating his nephew and he was always cracking jokes or something to make me laugh. I seen him awhile back and knew he didn't look good but I never heard about his passing. My thoughts are with all of his family and friends. He was a great man.

Although a year younger, I was a football teamate Phil's senior year with the Maroons, I too have a Phil story that sticks with me 46 years later. While watching film after a game one of our coaches suddenly shouted, "pause the film, Highsmith was that you?" The other 40 guys perked up as Phil said "yeah coach...." At that point the coach said "back the film up and watch Highsmith." Phil was running downfield full speed and an opposition player dove in front of him to block him. As Phil fell forward he "tucked" and did either a front flip or forward roll right back on his feet and kept running in one continuous motion. The coaches ran the play back numerous times and the team was weak with laughter.... but in awe of Phil's determination to keep going and finish the play. From what I've read this evening this story was a precursor of the determination and humor his family, friends, and students have seen during his life. My prayers are with his family.
