Paul Schmitt
Paul E. Schmitt, 77, of Highland, Ill., born June 6, 1936, in Highland, Ill., passed away at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland, Ill.
Paul grew up in Grantfork and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1958. He was stationed in San Diego, Calif., and was an aircraft mechanic. He operated the Grantfork Bowl from July of 1958 to 1968, owned Doug's Shoe Store form 1968 to 1969 and owned Dog and Suds in Highland from 1969 to 1971, and from 1971 to 1977 traveled for Dog and Suds, Inc. throughout the south and Midwest. Paul started working for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation in 1977 and retired in 1999. He then volunteered at the Highland Fire Department from 1979 to 1997, was the treasurer of the department in 1988 and 1989, and president in 1992. He also worked with the Highland EMS Department in 1990-1997, and was awarded the E.M.T. of the Year award in 1993. He retired in 1998 from the EMS and Fire Department. Mr. Schmitt was a Past Precinct Committeeman (1992-1998), a member of the Highland Zoning Board in 1999. He never missed his grandchildren's sporting events. He enjoyed bus tours, Tuesday afternoon gatherings with friends, and was very faithful to Perpetual Adoration Prayers every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Hospital, Highland, Ill.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Highland, Ill., former Teamster Local 525 (25 years) in Alton, Ill., Knights of Columbus 1580 since 1958 in Highland, Ill., Highland Precinct Committeeman 1992-1998, former Highland Jaycees, Highland Zoning Board (1999) and former Volunteer Highland Fireman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara A., nee Frey, Schmitt, whom he married on Oct. 10, 1959, in Highland, Ill., and who died March 31, 2009; and his parents, Edward Joseph and Anna Mary, nee Reidelberger, Schmitt.
Surviving are his daughters, Kim A. Brogan of St. Charles, Mo., and Sherri L. (Timothy) Patek of Troy, Ill.; grandchildren, Jerica R. Patek of Troy, Ill., Austin T. Patek of Troy, Ill., Destin M. Patek of Troy, Ill., and Riley A. Brogan of St. Charles, Mo.; sisters, Dianne J. Frey of St. Louis, Mo., and Pat A. (Braden) Winter of Charlotte, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, 2013, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, Ill., with Rev. Father Charles A. Edwards officiating. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland, Ill.
