Stanley Varel
Stanley Varel, 67, of Bartelso, Ill., born Feb. 6, 1949, in Breese, Ill., died Thursday, March 3, 2016, in St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill.
Mr. Varel retired as a surveyor for Thouvenot, Wade, and Moerchen. He was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and Men's Sodality, the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary, Bartelso Knights of Columbus, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Bishop Althoff Assembly, and a former member of the Mater Dei Fathers and Friends. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing euchre and pinochle, picking up pecans and hickory nuts, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Loretta, nee Rensing, Varel; a sister, Linda Wesselmann; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alvin and Leona, nee Tebbe, Bruns; and a brother-in-law, Paul Bruns.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann, nee Bruns, Varel of Bartelso, whom he married on April 17, 1971, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Germantown; his children, Michelle (Todd) Bohnenstiehl of Marine, Angie (Mark) Robke of Trenton, Christy (Geoff) Sheldon of Albers, and Alan (Jill) Varel of Bartelso; grandchildren, Justin and Jordan Bohnenstiehl, Owen Robke, Gabrielle Honeycut, Brianna and Jacob Sheldon, Tinley and Tatum Varel; siblings, Ron (Mary Jo) Varel of Trenton, Greg (Jeanne) Varel of Bartelso, Geralyn (Keith) Doelling of Venedy, and Mark (Debra) Varel of Beckemeyer; a brother-in-law, Marvin Wesselmann of Carlyle; a sister-in-law, Betty Bruns of Breese; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 6, 2016, and again from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016, at Moss Funeral Home, Germantown, Ill. The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Bishop Althoff Assembly will hold the Chalice Service at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Funeral: Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 7, 2016, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Bartelso, Ill., with Father James Buerster officiating. Interment will follow in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Bartelso.
