Louis Hamilton Jr.
Louis H. Hamilton Jr., 89, of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 10, 1924, in East St. Louis, Ill., died Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.
Mr. Hamilton retired in 1987 as a maintenance superintendent from Anheuser-Busch, Inc., St. Louis, Mo., after 32 years of service. He had previously worked at the St. Louis Globe Democrat. Louis was a member and past president of the International Association of Machinists District 9 and a member and past president of the St. Louis Chapter of the NBPA (National Beverage Packaging Association).
He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and St. Luke Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Serra Club of St. Clair County, for which he served as District Governor. He was a former member of Knights of Columbus Post 592, East St. Louis, IL. Louis was also a member and past president of the Cathedral & Althoff Catholic High School Fathers & Friends Club, and a member of the White House Retreat League at the Jesuit retreat house in St. Louis, Mo, and the St. Clair County Historical Society.
Mr. Hamilton served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars. He was a lifetime member of the 36th Infantry Division Association, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Alice, nee Heger, Hamilton, whom he married on May 4, 1946, and who died May 25, 2002; his parents, Louis H. and Mary Adele, nee Harper, Hamilton; and a brother, William Hamilton.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Richard (Patricia) Hamilton of St. Charles, Mo., Jim Hamilton of Shiloh, Ill., and Diane Hamilton (special friend, Mark St. Eve) of Belleville, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Richard Jr. (Melissa) Hamilton of St. Charles, Mo., Michelle (Jon Douglas) Perkins of Ankeny, Iowa, Keith (Dawn) Hamilton of Dardenne Prairie, Mo., Celeste (Darin) Absher of O'Fallon, Mo., Kevin (Julianna) Hamilton of Roxana, Ill., James "J.T." Hamilton Jr. of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Leslie L. Hamilton of Belleville, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, James (Kate) Hamilton of Belleville, Ill., and Harry Hamilton of Columbia, Ill.; a sister, Dolores (Joseph) Decker of Glen Carbon, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hamilton of Memphis, Tenn.; and nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Serra Club, to the St. Vincent De Paul Society, to the Belleville Diocesan Ministry to the Sick and Aged, or to the Catholic Urban Program. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill. A Serra Club ritual will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at St. Teresa Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Father Jim Thomas, Father Eugene Neff, and Monsignor James Margason concelebrating. Entombment with military honors will follow at Mount Carmel Mausoleum, Belleville, Ill.
