Dr. Hogan was my favorite teacher and encouraged me to become a lawyer. I did. Years after I graduated, he called my home on behalf of WWU. I asked if he remembered me and he said 'of course I do'. I will always remember him. He made me think and he made me laugh and he inspired me to be better and to care about the world around me.

Just learned one of my most beloved professors from Western passed away. Professor Hogan challenged and inspired me every day....as well as made me laugh....so much respect for him. I am so sorry for your loss...

Eugene Hogan was my favorite teacher at Western. I think of him often and owe him a great debt.

I knew Gene at Gonzaga University and last saw him in l958. I was an acquaintance a year behind him, and I doubt if he would have even remembered me but he remains in my memory as a very bright guy, a campus politician in the best sense of the word, and fun to be around and hear talk. It was a privilege to have known him in my youth, andin his.
Why these words four years after Gene's death? He entered my consciousness in an unlikely and coincidental way, and belated as they are, I just wanted to add a few words of tribute to Gene.

Emmet and the Hogan Family,
So sorry to hear about your Dad. I lost my Dad 5 years ago and I know how difficult it is. Just remember all the wonderful times and talk of him often. He will not be forgotten. All the best to you all.

El,Kathryn,Gene,Emmett,Brendan,John, Joseph --

Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers -- so sad about Gene -- he was a great man and will be missed by many. Wish I could be there -- but hopefully will get to see you all soon.

Love,

Eleanor and the Hogan clan,
I was very saddened and surprised to hear of Gene's passing. Of all my professors at WWU, he was the most demanding and appreciated--he stood out in a pretty good crowd. He was always a stickler for fairness and facts, and my B in Con Law was worth more than many A's.

Even more than his teaching, I valued his support when I ran for Mayor. When I heard a postal worker tell me that he was voting for me because Gene Hogan told him to, I knew I had passed my interview!

As I remarked to friends last week, Gene managed to maintain a young man's indignation at the wrongs of the world at a time when many of his peers grew compacent. The world needs more people with Gene's sense of right and wrong. I am truly sorry for your--our--loss.

I first met Dr. Hogan in 1981 at WWU in a political science class. Immediately I was struck by his passion for life and teaching. I feel honored to have known Dr. Eugene Hogan. I will not forget this great man.

To the Hogan family,

Where most upon passing have a few questions for God on the "welcome home" walk, it is my guess that God has a few humorous questions for Gene! It was a blessing and honor to be your babysitter back in the day, and the easiest job I ever had . . . which was a reflection of the love and respect of Gene and Eleanor as parents.
I grieve with you.
