My memories of Dan are great ones. So enjoyed having him on the chess team at FHS.
Story: The chess and math teams sponsored a dance, and at one point a crowd formed around... what? Maybe a fight, so being a good chaperone I stuck my head in the middle to see, what else, this quiet chessplayer break dancing to beat the band! Dan the man.
Very saddened when Dave Peters called with the bad news. The next Monday evening at the final chess meet of the season, before the final championship round, I took the Sunday cover story about Dan and, with difficulty, read it to all sixty students. We then had a moment of silence to honor a great man.
Condolences, love and hugs,
I just want to say my dearest sympathy for the loss of your son Daniel he will always be a Hero in American eyes and never forgotten for his true Heroism.. Your family is in our hearts, and prayers.

To Sandy and John, and all family members,
Sandy,it is with such sadness this past week to know your loss as a proud mother. Daniel was a courageous leader and hero during his dedicated military service. In our many talks of our sons over the years and our recent visit during the holidays I enjoyed bumping into you in the Ferndale Haggin's and seeing your radiant face smiling as you shared your deepest admiration and respect for your son as you updated my daughter Krystal and I about his recent accomplishments in service. I know over the years how proud you were of Daniel and his high honors academically and this comes from having the tremendous support of you and John as parents. You two are also heroes as you face the loss of your son. May you find comfort in your grief with memories of happy times and know the community is mourning your loss as a family too. Please Sandra, get a hold of me as I enjoyed our chats as military moms and sharing our son's stories and honors. Thinking of you lots and sending my heartful prayers to your whole family. Hugs to you all, Kathy

We will never forget him. If there is anything you need please call... Jim and Laurie Pope

As a former HMH-363 pilot (Red Lions 91-95) my thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Capt Bartle and the families of all the Marines lost on that day. I know first hand how no words can ease the pain of a loss of this magnitude. However, I do know this.. Even though I didn't know the young Capt personally, I have had the honor of knowing many like him. Young men who will run to the sound of the guns, as others run away. Men (and women) who step up to defend those who are incapable of defending themselves. Those who are driven by a higher calling and a challenge not provided in regular society… To earn the title of Marine is one thing. Earning the wings of a Marine Corps Aviator is quite another. Only 7% of those who qualify for Navy Marine Corps flight training will ever wear the Wings of Gold.. I can just about guarantee that the proudest day of his life was the day he walked across that stage to pin on his wings.
Leading Marines, flying into the mouth of the cat, knowing that the Marines to your right and left will give everything for you, and you everything for them. Many men live their entire lives never knowing or experiencing these things.. The young Captains life was cut short much too soon, but the life he led is truly something to celebrate.. I know he made a positive difference in this world.. A difference in the lives of his family, his friends and his Marines.. The other night I said a prayer over my new 3 month old son.. I prayed that he too will become such a man…
Semper Fi Marine, God bless you and your family…

To the family of Capt. Bartle. This is my Thank You to you all. This is part of a Poem I wrote and I want to share with you all.
Born in the Land of the Free,
Home of the Brave.
A Nation full of Heroes.
A world that honors heroes like you.
Kids who want to grow up to be like you.
Born in a Wolrd where you can choose,
Choose who and what you want to be.
You choose to be a Protector of us all.
You are here for us in our good times and in the worst moments.
Putting you life on the line to save us.
Born to a Nation that shows Pride,
Pride in hanging a flag in honor.
Pride in the men and women who fight for us.
Pride in honoring those who gave their lives for us.
On September 11, 2001, we hung our flags in honor again.
We honor those who lost loved ones, the missing, and those helping. To honor the United States, Land of the Free and Home to so many Brave.
Today Jan. 27, 2012, I say Thank You to you who fought for us.
Knowing that Thank You means so much to you and your family, I say Thank You.
Today we share the pain and now we mourn by the side of family and friends together as one.
Knowing in our hearts, we will never forget what you did for us, the Nation.
Today I will stand by my flag and salute you as I shall for the rest of my life.
May God Bless you all.
From a Very PROUD Daughter of a USMC Vet

You are my Hero may god keep you in his arms forever.
Our deepest Sympathies go out to you and your family, Thank-you for defending our country.
To the family and friends of Captain Bartle-
I didn't know your dear Daniel, but reading a little bit about his life made me feel as if I knew his heart, a heart that chose a life of excellence and honor and service to others. I'm thankful for his life and send you my deepest sympathies at this time of tremendous loss to your family and to our nation.
God bless Captain Bartle and give him everlasting peace and rest and joy. God give you, his family and friends, comfort in your grief, and may He give you happy tears as you remember and honor this hero of yours, and ours.
From a proud Air Force mom, who appreciates your family's sacrifice, my heartfelt prayers for you all-
May you rest in peace my brother. We are all honored to have served with you.
Eternal Father, grant, we pray
To all Marines, both night and day
The courage, honor, strength, and skill
Their land to serve, thy law fulfill
Be thou the shield forevermore
From every peril to the Corps.
Lord, guard and guide the men who fly
Through the great spaces in the sky,
Be with them always in the air,
In dark'ning storms or sunlight fair.
O, Hear us when we lift our prayer,
For those in peril in the air.
W.S. Weston, USMC ret.
Dear Sandy and John, It was with shock that I saw your young Daniel's picture today in the paper. What a handsome, stellar young man! You have so much to be proud of! My heart goes out to you, as you part with him far too soon. God be with you during this difficult time, as I know He has been from the very beginning of Daniel's life.....With love and prayers, Sheila St. John
Rest In Peace, Captain Bartles..Thank you for your sacrifice for our country.
Dan, you were a Patriot of action, not of words. You were a joy to have in my classroom. Best thoughts from another wartime veteran to the Parents who brought up and encouraged such a fine son, a man with such great potential and character.
John and Sandy,
Our hearts grieve for you---please know that you are in our prayers constantly. In our world today, there are so few good and honorable men. Dan was one of a vanishing breed of heroes.
God is with you with his arms around you comforting you during this difficult time. Just know that you have a beautiful angel in heaven watching down on you. Please have faith in our lord to know he will help you through this and always remember your son was a hero.
Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to the Bartle family and citizens of Ferndale. Capt. Bartle was surely one of our finest young men.It is our prayer that the love God gives to us all will strengthen and sustain you in the days and years ahead. Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) Warmest Regards. Warren and Ethel Hohnstein
Dearest John & Sandy, Sheila, John Jr and all the Bartle & Davis family members, our prayers and deepest sympathy are with you now. We pray for the repose of dear Dan's soul. Only a mother & father who have lost a child can begin to know the depth of your pain and the hurt upon your hearts. Dan is our hero. But for us, Dan will always be that little boy who asked so many questions and many times gave us his version of the answer. He was a special child as well as a special young man whose life ended far too soon. We know he is watching over us all now and holding us in his prayers. He is truly unforgettable. Our love to you all.
We are deeply sorry for the loss of your fine Hero. Please find comfort in knowing that he made a difference while he was here. He will be remembered and honored forever. Thank you for blessing us with him. We are forever grateful for his service as a Marine. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all Bartle Family.

Dear Bartle Family,
My name is Gunnery Sergeant Charles Rowe, Captain Bartle was my Officer in Charge and led myself and 21 other Marines in the Airframes shop. On Tuesday we had our memorial here and afterward my Marines and I went around the room and talked about the loss of an incredible man and an outstanding Marine Officer. A few things that stood out in our talk were how we are going to miss his laugh and his intensity, but the overwhelming concensus was that what we will miss most is his sincere dedication and concern for the welfare of those that were in his charge. Captain Bartle came to our shop in August and quickly became a member of the Airframes Family.
My sincere condolences,
Gunnery Sergeant, USMC
Dear Bartle family,

Any words I would write you would be dwarfed by these:
"I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."
I am so sorry for your loss. I know how you feel, I too lost my husband almost a year ago. I am sure Capt Bartle is up there getting my husband in line in ranks along with the rest of the ones we lost. I will light a candle in his honor. Again, I am truly sorry for your loss.
The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to CPT. Daniel B. Bartle our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Dan. And to Dan it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the supreme sacrifice he made for his country while opposing enemy forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Dan, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,307 Legionnaire Veterans of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dan's family and loved ones. Semper Fidelis !
