A. Scherer Obituary

A. George Scherer III

1933 - 2015 A. George Scherer III died on October 17, 2015 at Albany Medical Center hospital in Albany, NY. Great, great grandson of famed 19th-century painter Francis Bicknell Carpenter, George had a passion for history and literature. Born in New York City on August 13, 1933, George grew up during his early years in Rumson, NJ. The family later moved back to New York City where George attended St. Bernard's School. In 1952, he graduated cum laude from St. Paul's School in Concord NH. At St. Paul's he was co-captain and goaltender of the ice hockey team. He stayed in touch with many of his classmates. George graduated from Yale University in 1956 with a degree in English. At Yale, he joined the hockey team as a goalie and broke the record for the highest number of saves in a single game. He still stands atop the Yale career rankings in save percentage (.899). After college, he went on to play with the New York St. Nicks Hockey Club. George worked for many years in the paper and pulp industry, starting in the woods of Maine and later working for Diamond International Corporation. George married Carlin Whitney Scherer, in 1961, and they had one son, John Carpenter Scherer. He was also the kind stepfather to Richard R. Stewart Jr. and Whitney Stewart. The family lived for many years in Wayland, MA before George and Carlin moved and split their time between Florida and Vermont, finally settling in Manchester, VT. In his retirement years, George became an active volunteer for Bennington County Meals on Wheels, delivering meals from Manchester and Dorset, East Dorset and Pawlet, and way up the mountain to the Bondville area. The Meals on Wheels recipients appreciated George's visits because he took time to chat and become a friend. George's true loves were his animals too many to name them all here - but some of his favorites were Gwennie, Annie, Toesie, Millie, Wynnie, Joey, and Dunkin. He will now join his canine friends who await him on the Rainbow Bridge. Contributions in his memory can be made to Second Chance Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 620, in Shaftsbury, VT. SERVICES: Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11a.m. at Brewster & Shea Funeral Service, 34 Park Place, Manchester Center, VT. Interment will follow in the family lot in Dellwood Cemetery. To send the family personal email condolences please visit : www.sheafuneralhomes.com

George you will be sooo missed. I remember so many things about your kindness and love for others. One of those include me finding a cat that came out of our swamp. I called around to see who owned it and You asked if you could take it to your vet to be checked and wanted to support this. You were so very caring. Thank you for sharing your time on earth with all of us.
