Deborah Dorfman took me under her wing when I arrived at SUNY Albany as a naive new assistant professor. She was one of the wisest, best people I've ever known. I learned so much from her, and I will miss her.

Deborah was a beautiful woman in every way: a patient and wise mentor to her students, and a generous colleague to new faculty in the Department of English at the University at Albany. When I joined the department, my office was across the corridor from hers, and I remember her kindness fondly--one that included every spring protection of a little nest built by sparrows on the window ledge of her third floor office. She would fix a cardboard box around it, leaving her window open regardless of changes in the weather, watching over the eggs and then newly hatched chicks until at last they flew away. Her observations in department meetings were often funny, sometimes a bit off the wall, but penetrating in their wisdom. She endured setbacks in health, griefs and loss with extraordinary dignity, courage and resilience of character. After her retirement, I visited her several times for lunch and trips to art museums: her aesthetic sensibility and fine eye were a joy to be with, and her wry sense of humor always a pleasure. News of Deborah's passing came as a shock--not because I hadn't known that her health was at risk, but because I cannot think of her in any other way but as one still tending her garden, singing with the birds, stoking her cat, being there always gentle, poetic, kind. Dear Debbie, you are missed by all of your old English department friends.
