My memories of Joe, like for so many others at
Bennington, go back decades. I can't think of anyone who so exemplifed a model of excellence in every way. His hallmarks of wisdom
and wit were available for everyone along with a genuine sense of caring and affection. His musicianship and playing were pure and beautiful. And Joe's moral compass was impeccable and inspired one to reach for that level. I feel very fortunate to have known him! With my deepest sympathy Cathy,to you and to his children, and I hope you will all be comforted by precious and happy memories.

Hello Kathy and Family,

You are in my thoughts.

Dear Cathy,

I was deeply saddened to hear about Joe's death. What a remarkable and full life he had! I will remember him for his musicianship and his wit, but most of all for his devotion to principles and his support of his colleagues. He was truly one of a kind, representing the best of an earlier generation musically and personally, while simultaneously throwing himself into contemporary music and ideas with his characteristic commitment. Although many of us in NYC have not been in touch for years, Joe's legacy in NY musical circles is secure.

I am sure that you have many wonderful memories of your life together that will always remain with you. My thoughts are with you and your family at this time.

Joe was my mentor, my friend, and a rare person who somehow made me feel like family. I met him when I first moved to NYC. He lived close by and I was lucky enough to be playing in the same musical groups that he was at the time. He was an invaluable source of musical knowledge and influence. He was also someone who would provoke you to question your personal choices and decisions when he thought it might be helpful. He and Cathy were there for me with moral support for a series of tragedies and I'll always love them for that! To all of you; Cathy, Sol, Peter, Michael, and Joanna: I send you my heartfelt sympathy.

PS The folks at Kismat send their condolences too.
