It's funny how a piece of music takes you back. I was listening to the 2nd movement of Beethoven's Pathetique sonata this morning. It's my favorite piece in A-flat major. I know the key, because it was our Form and Analysis in college. Our professor, Dr. Bruce Wise handed us a copy and told us to write about it. I wrote for over an hour, pouring over every detail I could glean. Peering into Beethoven's mind. That test was a seminal moment for me. I realized this morning, that was the last day of class I had with that amazing teacher- after 3 semesters of theory, a semester each of orchestration, form and analysis, and then a semester of music composition, he passed me off to a colleague for counterpoint and further composition lessons. But, the lessons I learned from him have never left me. I wish I had realized at the time how far his influence would take me. Thank you Dr. Wise, I wish I could have told you this all of n person.

Bruce Wise was one of the kindest, most supportive teachers that a student could hope to encounter. What I learned from him is still an essential part of how I compose and teach. It was an honor being one of his students.
