I first met Gordon, ' Gordy ';
In the fall of 2012 and I seen him till, late spring early summer 2013, at the K-mart store and the Dollar tree in Great Barrington, when I would go there once or twice a week for basic needs.
He told me about his life, some family history and his ship the USS Fall river. Needless to say I printed a picture of the ship and its history, after his service and he was so thrilled !
Gordon told me he was from Connecticut too and his family had run a restaurant in Winstead, I presume, depression era. I told him a little about my family history in Connecticut going back to the 20's and 30's, when my grandfather worked for the locally famous; John DeMichael in Torrington and they built route 4 in Sharon, Connecticut. Gordy said he remembered some of those things....
I never seen him again after, those 9-10 chance meetings and wondered, needless to say........ I did a Google and got the news...... Its a strange thing, meeting and knowing Gordon and having him pass and I know no-one, that knows myself.
Anyway Its a memory, a fate, I was blessed with and will never forget. Gordon will probably be the last WW2 veteran and person of that generation, I may ever meet again..... He was born only 2 months, before my own father, who served too.
I will visit his grave too. Bless you Gordy and thank you for your soul you imparted on my life, in that short time and meetings.......
