Hi Dad. It's been a while since I visited you here. Yesterday, I viewed a movie entitled "I Never Sang For My Father." It's a fine film and reminded me of how things were when you were still with us. This morning, I felt a powerful yearning to see and hug you. There is no emotion more complex and painful than keening for a parent who is no longer physically present. Sigh ... Well, the reason I wrote is this. Unlike the film character, I actually did get the chance to sing for you. It was a week or so before you went into the nursing home. You were poking around in your garden and I was watching the film musical "Man of La Mancha." Came time for the lead player to belt out "The Impossible Dream" and I found myself, not singing along, but singing with him, word for word, note for note. Why was this so significant? Dad, I was in my sixties and you'd never heard me sing, I mean really sing, full-throated and from the heart. All those years I'd held back out of fear of you not fully approving, or something like that. How sad it took so long. How marvelous it happened at all! That long-ago afternoon, you likened my singing voice to that of Julie Andrews. Whoa! Thank you, Dad. A big part of me really needed to hear that from you. It is certainly something I shall never forget. Hugs and oodles of love to you and Mother.

My Dear Daddy, Today is Father's day and I am going to the ocean with my son Ben. I wear your wedding band so you will be with us also. I love you so much Dad.
Love from your son John.
