Walter Eugene Barber
1925-2014 PITTSFIELD Walter Eugene Barber, 88, of 155 South Mountain Road, died Sunday, January 19, 2014, at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Pittsfield on April 13, 1925, a son of Andrew and Anna Carden Barber, he was a 1943 graduate of Dalton High School. He held a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Indiana Technical Institute (1948). He had a real estate broker license from Lee Institute. He attended Berkshire Business School. He served with the United States Navy from 1943 to 1945 as a carpenter's mate, 2nd class. He served on the NTC Sampson, NY; USS Joseph E Campbell, and USS Brough. He received the Victory Medal WWII, American Area, Asiatic Pacific, European, African ME (2 stars) and the Purple Heart. Mr. Barber had worked in GE. He was employed by the Shapiro Motors, Inc. as the used car and truck manager for 25 years. Prior to that he worked for Jack Lindsay, Inc. Mr. Barber owned and operated Barber's Package and Convenience Stores in Pittsfield and Lenox until 1985; the Squaw Peak Travel Agency with offices in Dalton, Great Barrington, Lenox, and Pittsfield; and Barber's Realty as a real estate agent and broker in Pittsfield and Cheshire. He had been an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and was a hockey program coach. He enjoyed carpentry and building projects, traveling, vacationing to Cape Cod, and most of all he enjoyed people and spending time with his family. Mr. Barber leaves his wife, the former Ann I. Piekos, whom he married on June 24, 1988, at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Cheshire. He is also survived by three children, Brenda Cook of Bradenton, Florida; Brian (and Susan) Barber of Haddonfield, New Jersey; and Bruce (and Tricia) Barber of Shamong, New Jersey; six grandchildren, Ashley Barber of Ben Salem, Penn; Blair Mauger and Bruce Barber of Haddonfield, New Jersey; Sean Barber, Brooke Barber, and Breanna Barber of Shamong, New Jersey; a great granddaughter, Shelby Noel Mauger; three sisters, Jean Barber of Pittsfield, Lillian Larder of Thompson, Georgia; and Claire Ostrander of Lanesborough. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Andrew Barber, Eugene Barber, and George Barber; and four sisters, Ann Rice, Gloria Barber, Irene Barna, and Joyce Secord. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Walter E. Barber will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 10 a.m. from DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Cheshire. Burial will be in Cheshire Cemetery in the Spring. Calling hours will be Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at DERY FUNERAL HOME in Pittsfield. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting memorial contributions be made to either the County Ambulance, The Pittsfield Supportive DayAdult Day Care Services, or to the Elder Services of Berkshire County, in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.

I remember Mr. Barber was a Veteran and loved the Lake. I learned to water ski thanks to Walt. He had a great sense of Humor and loved his kids. God's Speed, see you on the other side.

Brenda,Brian and Bruce...so sorry to read about Walt's passing. He was a great and very compassionate man , always up beat. I remember the great times spending each summer on Pontosic Lake water sking,swimming,fishing and cooking out. I can still hear Walt calling "Donnie" whenever he wanted my Dad for something.
