Bill Haast was one of a kind. While doing some research in Florida many years ago, I called Bill for some information concerning a subspecies of black racer that had been named after him (subspecies "haasti"). Bill was skeptical of the eligibility of this particular color variant for subspecies status and plainly said so. Most scientists consider it quite an honor to have a "new" species or subspecies named for them but, with his typical modesty, Bill just shrugged it off and let his professional integrity trump the intended honor. Bill Haast, for this kind of honesty and for all the other things written here in tribute to him, deserves to be richly honored in his passing. We shall not see his like again.
