Edward Nemeth Obituary

Edward Louis Nemeth, adored husband, father and grandfather, passed away May 11, 2014 at home, with his wife Nancy by his side. Born in East Chicago, Indiana on June 25, 1925 to Hungarian immigrant parents, Ed was an Eagle Scout, a state champion high school wrestler and football player. He served in WWII with the 101st Airborne Division at Bastogne and Berchtesgaden, and after his return home, attended Northwestern University where he met his future wife, Nancy Ann Myers. At Northwestern, he was a starting guard for the football team, which went on to win the 1949 Rose Bowl Championship. Ed graduated from N.U. in 1950 and went to work for Inland Steel in Calumet Harbor, Indiana. From there the family moved to Delaware where he was the rolling mill manager for Phoenix Steel, and then in 1974, moved on to Birmingham where he was President and General Manager of Southern United Steel. He was a wonderful storyteller, played a mean harmonica, and could fix anything that needed fixing. Ed leaves behind Nancy, his beloved wife of 60 years, three daughters, Paula Nemeth Mitchell, Sally Nemeth, and Carolyn (Craig) Porter, and five grandchildren, Carter and Kendra Mitchell and Lily, Audrey, and Owen Porter who will never be the same without him. Services will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 3775 Crosshaven Dr., Vestavia Hills, on Saturday, May 17 at 2PM with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name can be made to his childhood parish, Holy Trinity Hungarian Catholic Church, 4759 McCook Ave., East Chicago, Indiana, 46312.

It was an honor to serve such a great man. He was an American Patriot. A defender of freedom, liberty and justice. A real man. The kind that loved his children and grandchildren very much. His love for you always showed up in his face when one of you came in and spoke to him. His love for you all is what I admire the most.
