Very sorry to hear of Bill's passing. I only knew Bill for a few months, in a challenging environment, but found him to be a wonderful person.
I knew Bill during my deployment in support of OEF/OIF in 2010. Bill was always a good friend--to everyone who knew him. He always had a happy word, and solid advice. When I found out he was gone I thought of different memories of him, and they were all good. He was a friend who will be missed.
Sad to hear the tragic news of Bill's passing. I am grateful for the time I had to know him and call him my friend.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to William Clinton (Bill) Smith our “Brother-in-Arms”. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Bill. And to Bill it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country during multiple overseas deployments, including Operation Iraqi Freedom while serving in the U.S. Army. Bill, your commendable service to the Boy Scouts of America is also honored and greatly appreciated. You served with honor and distinction and you are a credit to our nation; we bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.
On behalf of the 1,261 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Bill's family and loved ones.

I am heartbroken at the passing of my good friend Bill. I am a better man because of him and I'm deeply saddened I will no longer enjoy his friendship and everything he represented as a soldier, husband, father, and American.

Bill was a terrific mentor to many young men--so proud David was one of his Eagle Scouts. He has many fond memories of camping with Bill & Keith. Our prayers are with you and Josh!
