KATHARINE JENKINS "KITTY" SUTHERLAND

SUTHERLAND, KATHARINE JENKINS "KITTY" Katharine Jenkins "Kitty" Sutherland went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 11, 2012. She was born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 26, 1926. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, James Stanley Sutherland III, and her parents, Raleigh McGhee Jenkins and Katharine Crommelin Jenkins. Kitty attended Lakeview Grammar School, Phillips High School, and graduated from Vassar College in 1946. After graduate school at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, she worked for the War Department's historical division in the Pentagon and The Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. She returned to Birmingham in 1956 to marry Jim Sutherland. She had a gift for words and loved to write on many topics. She wrote and published a cookbook and contributed chapters to books ranging in subject from Alabama Rivers to the re-arming of the French after World War II. She worked for The Birmingham News for 15 years writing the "Scribblers" column while entertaining her many friends, as well the occasional foreign dignitary. In 1971, Kitty and two partners opened The Green Door health food store in Mountain Brook Village. She was a passionate proponent for good health through nutrition and a pioneer in this field. She sold the business after 17 years to pursue her next endeavor, founding the Webster Christian School. Kitty was able to promote academic excellence through a Christian World View. Kitty was a member of The Birmingham Country Club, The "Gaitees" Dance Club (where she was always a sought after dance partner). The Colonial Dames of America, The Pelham Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Junior League of Birmingham, and The Argus Study Society. She is survived by her daughter Katharine Sutherland Patton (Donald), her three much loved grandchildren: James Quinton Patton, William Sutherland Patton, Katharine Forrester Patton, her sister, Eulalie Jenkins Draper (Clare), nephews, Clare Hill Draper IV (Laura), Raleigh Jenkins Draper, niece Eulalie Crommelin Draper Given (Robert) as well as many special cousins and godchildren. A memorial services will be held at the Episcopal Church of the Advent on Friday, December 14th at 3:00 pm. with visitation at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m. The family asks that memorials be made to Cathedral Church of the Advent: 2017 6th Ave. North Birmingham, AL 35203.
