With passing of Dr James Halsey, we lost one of the most influential neurologists in the state of Alabama in the past half-century. He came to the UAB in 1965 as an instructor and the seventh neurologists in the state of Alabama. With four faculties, he established the Department of Neurology at the UAB in 1974, which became one of the best teaching and research departments of neurology in the United State, with more than eighty current faculties.
Throughout his academic career at the UAB, he trained and mentored many past and current practicing neurologists in the state of Alabama and took care of many of their patients by referral, especially in stroke, headache, and general neurology.
For my part, he was the one who recruited me to the UAB in 1970 and provided me the steady academic support for the success of the Neuromuscular Disease Program at the UAB during his tenure as the chairman of department. For this, I thank him and will remember him.

Dr Shin J Oh, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Neurology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, February 15, 2018
