APPLETON, PATRICIA ANN ZIMMERMAN Age 80, of Mountain Brook, died May 15, 2011. She was born December 16,1930, in Earlville, Illinois, where she lived until graduating from high school in 1948. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth and Paul Zimmerman. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Joseph Hayne Appleton; and their six children, Joe Appleton and his wife Debbie, Kay Appleton Jenks, Jeff Appleton and his partner Denis Gibson, Tricia Appleton, Kevin Appleton and his wife Kimberly, and Kathryn Appleton; their grandchildren, Darin Appleton and his wife Kristy, Karen Hyneman and her husband Casey, Ryan Appleton, Zachary Hindman, Daniel Jenks, and Kelly Hindman; and her brothers Ted Zimmerman and his wife Jane, and Jerry Zimmerman. She attended and worked at the University of Illinois, where she met her husband and subsequently moved to Birmingham, Alabama, in 1954. In addition to being a homemaker and raising six children, she volunteered extensively including serving as Cub Scout Den Mother; President of the PTA and many other service roles at Cherokee Bend Elementary School; volunteering at the local homeless shelter, St Francis Xavier Church, and Cooper Green Hospital; 30 years tending to the wildflower garden at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens; pursuing art through painting, and her passion, which was her extraordinary wildflower expertise and garden at her home. She was a 53 year member of St Francis Xavier Church. She was also an active member of Garden Club and Bridge Club for over 50 years. Visitation will be at St Francis Xavier Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, AL 35213, on Wednesday, May 18, at 10:00 am followed by a mass at 11:00 am with burial at Elmwood Cemetery. In memory of Pat Appleton, memorials may be made to St Francis Xavier Church or the Benedictine Sisters, Sacred Heart Monastery, Finance Office, 916 Convent Road, Cullman, AL 35055. >

I was an airman at Chanute AFB in Illinois and was a good friend of Patricia when she worked at the Univ. of Illinois....a really good person and friend.
