Velma Creel Abbott
June 25, 1916-Sept. 11, 2013
Velma Creel Abbott of Birmingham passed away on September 11, 2013. She was born in Warrior, Alabama on June 25, 1916. She was raised in Helena where her father worked for the L&N Railroad. She was the daughter of the late John H. Creel and Mary Knobloch Creel and the sister of the late Elizabeth "Bubba" Creel. As a teenager, she moved to Birmingham with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Abbott. She is survived by her son, John (Deedee) Abbott, her daughter, Joan (Randy) Parker, her grandchildren, Laura "Missy" (Phil) Holly, Amanda "Mandy" (Jason) Drake, Jeff Parker and Andrew Parker, and her great-grandchildren, Daniel Holly, Noah Holly, and Sara Beth Holly. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary John Jones, Billie (Euel) Musgrove, and Betty (Curtis) White, and a large extended family. She as a long-time member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
The funeral mass will be on Friday, September 13, 2013 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Leeds at 10:00 AM, preceded by a rosary and visitation at 8:30 AM at the Church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at St. Martin's in the Pines and Dr. Harold Simon for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Nazareth House, a ministry to the mentally challenged, at P. O. Box 19548, Birmingham, AL 35219-9548 or the Benevolence Fund at St. Martin's in the Pines, 4941 Montevallo Road, Birmingham, AL 35210.
