I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Schembechler on two separate occasions several years apart. Once at an awards dinner in Tampa in the late 80's he signed a program for me and took a few minutes to talk about Michigan football. At a book signing a few years later - busy as he was - he managed a few words of conversation as he signed my copy of a book about Michigan football.

While it was easy to root for and admire Coach Schembechler from afar as a damn good football coach, having the opportunity to exchange pleasantries on two separate occasions was even better. It made him real and give me an appreciation of what a nice guy he was.

Dear Schembechler Family,

Bo is an American legend; a fabulous coach who taught young men about "The Team" and its importance in all aspects of life. Bo was Michigan, period. And he taught loyalty and respect to everyone he was around. I am from southern Minnesota, and grew up watching and listening to Michigan football in the 70's and 80's. Because of Bo, I am a lifelong Michigan football fan. I truly believe that Michigan is the #1 sports university in the country, knowing that it is also a top-notch university. My wife and 14-year old daughter bought us tickets to the 1st game against Vanderbilt for my 40th birthday; our first trip to beautiful Ann Arbor. What a gift to be in the Big House, the house that Bo built! God Bless you Bo! College Football has lost an icon. Coach, I plan on meeting you someday! GO BLUE!

I knew Coach as a child. As a solider I got to know Coach even better as I wrote back and forth to him and his wife Milly. I am a football Coach myself now and try my best every day to teach the game like Coach. Coach Bo Schembechler was and is everything to Michigan football. I hope I live to be half the man he was. I will miss you.
