So sad to hear of the passing of Sister Anne, or Sister Mary Arnold as I knew her as the principal of St. John's in Swampscott. An utterly indomitable spirit and larger than life presence in my early education. So many moments and quotes, i.e. regarding throwing snowballs, "Leave the snow where God put it!", and the more serious, "When you give, give silently". Of course her squeezebox playing and spooky Halloween song!

When our home became uninhabitable due to a fire, she invited my family to live in the convent with them, and having nowhere else to go, we did for two weeks! The very spirit of generosity, love and decency. A huge presence in my memory and education, I'm so sorry I missed the opportunity to tell her so.

Thank you to Bethany and all the Sister's who honored Sister Ann Gavin, it was a beautiful and memorable moment for those of us, to take with us, about a woman of grace, love and happiness. Dear Sister Ann, rest in peace in Heaven with God, for you have served him with your dedication and love, just as he watched you serve all of us. I am grateful we could revisit one another over these last few years, I will never forget your love and kindness. your cousin Patricia and "Johnny Diamond"

Sister Mary Arnold was Principal at Saint John's in Swampscott as I and most of my siblings began our education there. She was a fine leader and educator. When my mother began to cook for the sisters at the parish convent, Sister Mary Arnold and many others became cherished family friends. My mother, now resident at Little Sisters of the Poor Jeanne Jugan Residence in Somerville, and all of our family send our sympathies. We pray for Sister Anne, but we feel certain she is in the company of the One whom she served so long and well. She used to say to the whole school on inclement days, "Boys and Girls it is raining today, so we have to make our own sunshine." I have never forgotten those words which show a bit of her indomitable spirit. May she rest in joy!
