As young teenager I paid attention to Bernie when he described how he got into his business. He said he got into his car (a very old one) and made cold calls. He said he severely discounted one very popular item. He said he did so just to get potential customers to but one item they all used at a very good price. Once the customer bought that one item, he was confident he could make them recurring customers. Years later when I went to graduate business school, I often thought about Bernie and his first steps to success. Bernie was a very funny and likable guy. Condolences to Claire and Diane.

We became acquainted with Bernie later in his life and enjoyed his visits to Claire's home. Once, he took us by his hardware business. A measure of his character must come from the way he and his employees seemed to share a mutual devotion.
Equally sweet was the love shared with Julie, meeting her in Europe during world war II, and bringing her to America to be his bride. It seemed that they were partners in life and in work as they were together at the hardware business. He spoke of his fondness for her numerous times after her death.
We will miss his smile and the beam in his eyes as he beheld his great grand children.
