LYNWOOD HOXSIE Obituary

HOXSIE, Colonel Lynwood F., U.S. Army (ret.) Devoted over 39 years of his life to military service to his country. He died on June 7, 2013 in Dedham, Massachusetts at the age of 91. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Col. Hoxsie grew up in Rhode Island and attended Rhode Island College. Following the outbreak of World War II, he and his twin brother both interrupted their studies and joined the Army Air Corps. His brother was lost on a mission over Africa in 1943. As a bombardier with the 390th Bombardment Group, Col. Hoxsie flew 35 missions over Europe in 1944-45. "My father didn't talk about his war experiences, but he was proud of what he contributed," his son, Kenneth, said. "He was particularly proud of the Polish Home Army Cross Award and the Warsaw Uprising Cross, decorations that he received from the Polish government after the war for his role in dropping supplies to the Warsaw uprising. After the war, he completed his education degree at Rhode Island College and taught for two years at Moses Brown School in Providence. He then re-enlisted in the Army, and after serving in Germany, he held a number of posts in the United States. In 1962, he was promoted to colonel and served from then until his retirement in 1981 as the United States Property and Fiscal Officer for Rhode Island. Following his retirement from active duty, Col. Hoxsie remained active in volunteer and civic organizations. He served as the First Vice Chairman, Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) for Rhode Island; Chairman, Rhode Island Army Retiree Branch Council; Commander, Rhode Island Commandery, Military Order of Foreign Wars; and Assistant Secretary-General, National Commandery, Military Order of Foreign Wars. He and his wife, Theresa (Boner) Hoxsie, who died in 2008, moved to Westwood, Massachusetts in 1993. He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Vourneen, his niece, Deborah Anderson and his grandson, Christian. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 22 at Pilgrim Church, 25 South Main Street, Sherborn, with burial to follow at the Highland Cemetery, Dover. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the 390th Memorial Museum, 6000 East Valencia Road, Tucson, Az. 85756. For directions or to share a memory of Col.
