I met Mike in Boston in 1997 through a common friend from Rochester, NY. Mike took us out to a nice introductory lunch not too far from his office. Back then I was a refugee from Bosnia trying to rebuild my life in the States. He asked me many questions, including who had to shovel snow back home, my brother or I. Thank you for that, Mike. A couple of times in the conversation with Gary and me he would come back with no kidding', which I thought was super cool. I still do, and whenever I hear it, I remember Mike.
Even 20 years after meeting Mike, I remember his grace, candor and kindness. You will be in my thoughts and prayers Mike. My deepest condolences to your family, friends, neighbors and all of you who knew Mike.

I am sorry to hear of Uncle Mikes death. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. From what I remember when I was little was that Mike was always laughing.. and his laugh to me was loud.

Mike was my best friend in college and for a long time thereafter. We were teammates on the University of Rochester football team (where Mike excelled) and lived in the same fraternity. Mike was in my wedding and Godfather to my son Jerry. He and his lovely wife Kathy and my wife socialized quite a bit. Mikes nickname was Muggins, a name that fit him pertfectly. There was no more affable a person then Muggins. He was fun to be around. He made you a better person just being around him and observing how he treated people. A word he used often was goodness. Muggins was goodness personified. Everyone who knew Mike was touched by him. Mike had many friends and was adored by them. Even though he moved to Mass many years ago his name and antidotes about him were often discussed at gatherings in Rochester and everywhere friends of Muggins gathered. I love you Mike. Thanks for everything. You will never be forgotten.

By total coincidence, ran into Mike some years ago while visiting our son and family in Needham. I believe it was at the hardware store. It was a brief but very enjoyable occasion to catch up.

I always describe Mike as "my first and favorite mentor." I had the privilege of working with him at HBS for most of my 11 years there, and he taught me important life lessons that I carry with me today. For example, he taught me to give credit where credit is due, and to make sure your team members know you've got faith in them, especially when they aren't quite sure. He taught me the value of identifying colleagues with strengths in areas you need - AND making sure they know how grateful you are for what they bring.
Mike also taught me the importance of offering a warm smile and big handshake, even if you can't quite place someone. Of course, he swore he always remembered everyone's name....
My heart goes out to the Boland clan. Mike loved Kathy and was so proud of their girls. I'll always be grateful for the way he helped me shape my career and the lessons he taught through leading by example.
