IN THE LATE 70'S I WAS IN THE OFFICE OF WARD BAUMAN, GEORGE'S ACCOUNTANT. IT WAS GETTING TO BE LUNCH TIME, AND THIS MAN COMES IN THE OFFICE AND SAID "I SEE YOUR BUSY, I'LL COME BACK IN A FEW MINUTES". WARD HAD THE FELLOW COME IN AND SITDOWN. HE INTRODUCED ME TO THE FELLOW, IT WAS GEORGE STEINBRENNER. WE TALKED FOR A BIT AND THEN STEINBRENNER SAID, "HOW ABOUT LUNCH, I'M BUY'N". WHAT A NICE THING TO DO FOR SOMEONE HE DIDN'T KNOW. I'LL REMEMBER THAT LUNCH FOR A LONG, LONG TIME.

My husband drives for United Cab. One day while carrying a fare, his cab broke down in front of legends field. Just then Mr. Steinbrenner pulled up in his town car, had the driver pull over and walked over to see if he could help. The couple said no, but Mr. Steinbrenner said he would send his driver back on the way out to see if they had changed their minds. What a classy guy! Thanks for your class, Mr. Steinbrenner. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to your family.

To the George Steinbrenner family:
"The Boss" made us all proud to say that we were die hard New York Yankee fans! As proud as he was of all of his accomplishments as the owner of the Yankees, made all of us feel like they were our team and he was our fearless leader that would do all he could possibly do to make them our team! I COME FROM A FAMILY OF DIE HARD YANKEES FANS AND IT'S BECAUSE OF GEORGE THAT MY GRANDFATHER WAS PROUD TO TELL ME THE HISTORY OF THE YANKESS. IT WAS A VERY SAD DAY FOR ME WHEN I HEARD OF GEORGES SUDDEN DEATH AND MADE ME REMEMBER OF ALL OF THE STORIES THAT I GOT TO HEAR EVERYTIME THE YANKEES CAME ON TV HERE IN THE MIDWEST. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER BOSS LIKE "THE BOSS" AND I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT MY DAD IS GOING TO BE ABLE TO KEEP THE TRADITION ALIVE WITH MY KIDS AND TELL THEM YANKEE STORIES BECAUSE OF ALL THAT "THE BOSS" DID FOR OUR TEAM THE REAL AMERICAS TEAM. THANK YOU GEORGE

July 17, 2010
To the entire Steinbrenner family-----Although those of us who live in the Tampa Bay Area are aware of all the wonderful things George has done, there are others who for whatever reasons only know him as the Yankees Owner and Tyrant of a Boss! But rejoice in the fact you knew the man with the BIGGEST Heart in town! George made money....Lots of it, but many people are unaware of how often he placed his hands in his pockets to help others generously. George made sure children had a place to go and play and an education and medical care along the way. George made sure that no fallen Police Officers Family went without. The list goes on and on and just as George never looked for the recognition, I will not embarass you with all the details but only say THANK YOU. Each one of your lives and that of so many others have truly been touched by an Angel! May you find comfort and peace at this time and know that George left a big part of him in each of you to carry on as he would have done. This world was left a better place because of George and he will be missed by many!

To Mrs. Steinbrenner and Family,
The Tampa Bay area has clearly lost one of its pillars of light. His generosity and warmth for those in need was a breath of fresh air in a society where unfortunately this is more the exception than the rule. Mr. Steinbrenner was truly a role model and I applaud his efforts - he will truly be missed.
July 17, 2010
You will be missed dearly. My heart & prayers go out to you and the family and the team as well. You will never be forgotten. I'm just a fan and I'm lost for words. God bless always. May you rest in peace.. I might live in NJ but I'm a true NEW YORKER at heart.
July 17, 2010
To the Steinbrenner Family,

You as well as the rest of the world lost a great man with the passing of "The Boss". He was always personnable, caring and very accessible, which says a lot for his character. The stories coming out now only reaffirm what a great man he was. May his legacy live on, and those that he touched continue to do his work.
May God keep you all and help you through this difficult time.
July 17, 2010

To Joan, Jennifer, Jessica, Hank and Hal, A few short days ago, I was with heavy heart, and wanted to share my memories with you, but I decided that if I waited a few days, I would feel better and lighter in doing so.

I lost my beloved husband of 46 years, suddenly November 1, 2008. Sam was 71 years young. This very same man had been a self proclaimed widower each and every year from early spring to early fall. He, jokingly of course, would tell everyone that would listen to him, that I was having torrid affairs with numerous memorable and not so memorable persons affiliated with the New York Yankees, your George included. That eventually became old, as everyone who knew us, knew the story. What most people didn't know was that on our 1st wedding anniversay, we presented each other with a token gift of love -Sam gave me my very own fishing pole (ugh), and I gave him a lapel pin, which he proudly wore on a lapel, shirt collar, baseball cap, jacket, etc. The pin said: "We interrupt this marriage to bring you the baseball season". I can just hear Bob Sheppard announcing that today. These gifts were merely expressions of our love for each and our assurances we would support each other's passions outside our marriage. I did go on the (boring to me only) fishing trips with Sam whenever I could, and he too was always at my side, when his health provided, either at home in front of our TV watching NYY games, at the stadium in the Bronx, or Toronto when the Yankees were visiting. (The fishing pole remains in our family today, but I'm saddened to say I haven't seen the lapel pin for some years now, and never mentioned that fact to my husband. I did however, try to find another just like it, to no avail. I do believe now, that it will show up. Possibly the day I open the two foot lockers, one of which is full of Sam's Baseball caps, but not now, not today.

My Daddy had told me that I was born a Yankee fan (1941), and I believed him, as my Daddy never lied to me. I told my one of my twin sons, Philip, that he too was born a Yankee fan (1969), and I never lied to him. When I posted an e-mail to my son Philip in New Jersey last Tuesday, I mentioned to Philip I was saddened by the news, as we too from time to time were audibly critical of "the boss'" actions, but also reminded him of all the other wonderful and glorious moments we too shared, while Philip was growing up in this Yankee home. I reminded Philip that these moments we share were due mostly to Mr. Goerge Steinbrenner, a true Legend of the Game of Baseball. Your George may be out of sight, but will never be out of mind.

Philip and I shared comments about "the boss", bouncing e-mails back and forth, but this one part of Philip's last reply left me in tears - my son said, "I bet Dad has a lot to talk to Mr. Steinbrenner about, and maybe now Mom, he can sit in the owner's box with "The Boss".

I cannot possibly share your loss, but I can and do feel your pain. I'll leave all of you with this, my favorite: A heartfelt tear can show our love, as words can never do; It says, "I want to share your pain, my heart goes out to you". D. DeHaan

Respectfully and with sincere Sympathy,

Lucille Privitera, Pittsford, NY
(aka to my hubby only "Sweet LU2")
July 17, 2010
Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner, for what you did for not just the Yankees, but for all of baseball. You will truly be missed. God Bless you and God Bless the Yankees!
July 17, 2010
To the Family,
The great Steinbrenner charity toward people and causes from every venue in life would not have happened without your support...from the free tickets for under privileged kids, to stadiums for high schools,to emergency funds to families of fallen public servents...the Steinbrenner generosity is unmatched but the thing I remember most from my encounter with George is his devotion to his family. I was attending a meeting in Jupiter of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents where George had been asked to speak. During his comments on leadership and the importance of education to this group of public school leaders he made a comment about family that spoke magnitudes about this man, his values and those he loved. George told the group and I will never forget that he said the most important thing in his life was family and his children...that he had left instructions with his secretary that it did not matter who he was meeting with or what he was doing that if one of his children called he was to be interrupted immediately and the call put through...this one comment made a lasting impression on me and I often share George's comment with others when his name comes up in conversation. I was priviledged to meet and have him share his thoughts with me. I to share in your loss of George and feel as though I have lost a friend. My thoughts are with you during this most difficult time. Share memories of the good times during this dark period of mourning for the loss of one so dear.
July 17, 2010
To the Steinbrenner family my deepest condolances.I'am a Oriole fan but also a fan of baseball, I admired you as a no nonsense owner. You built a empire and a tradition of winning, you made other fans envious of there team not following your blueprint of winning baseball.Life is more than baseball, you will be missed off the field in helping so many people. You were indeed the ''BOSS'', god bless you and rest in peace.
July 17, 2010
I met Mr. Steinbrenner in 1999. My brother who resides in Tampa was getting married. My family & I stayed @ the Raddison Hotel on Courtney Campbell Causeway. A sports bar was located in the hotel where we were dining. I approached "The Boss" apprehensively b/c being a New Yorker I had always read mixed things about him. The NY Press was incorrect!! He was as friendly, kind, and knew the area of NY I was from. He kindly gave me his autograph for my nephew & wished us a great vacation.

My heart is heavy from Gate 4 in The Bronx to the Tampa Bay area for the Steinbrenner family. God Bless The Boss!!
July 17, 2010
Thanks for everything!

To the Steinbrenner Family:

My condolences on the passing of Mr. Steinbrenner. He transformed a "baseball team" into a dynasty through his savy business sense and love of the game and for that I am extremely thankful. His memory will live on with all of us who are passionate about our nation's past time. He did more for our game than any other owner in the 20th Century.

Blessings,

A Red Sox fan.
July 16, 2010
Godspeed Mr. Steinbrenner! You were the man for sure and will be missed, even though we never met face to face either here in Tampa or when I was a kid at Yankee stadium in NY. Always 100% admired everything about you.

July 16, 2010
When my husband was a teenager, he and his family lived across the street from the Steinbrenner's when they lived on Lindelaan. He likes to tell the story of being home alone one morning (rare in his family of 10) and being summoned to the front door by the doorbell ringing and repeated pounding on the door. He opened the door to Mr. Steinbrenner in his bathrobe and jammies, with my husband's family's station wagon on fire in the driveway behind him. Mr. Steinbrenner took charge and he and my husband put out the fire. My husband's parents came home after the fire was out and Mr. Steinbrenner told them my husband was the "bravest boy I ever met." My husband has gotten a lot of mileage out of that story. Mr. Steinbrenner was an asset to Tampa and will be missed.
July 16, 2010
MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO YOUR ENTIRE FAMILY....
July 16, 2010
RIP...MY BLESS GO OUT 2 U AND UR FAMILY...
July 16, 2010
We graduates of the Aquinas College High School are sad by the death of George Steinbrenner. I will recommend that we pray for George at our next alumni meeting in August.

We appreciate his promoting many of our values and his support of the Aquinas Endowment Fund which allows underprivileged children to attend a value oriented Catholic high school. We had an Aquinas Book of Records Spoof Fundraiser to raise money for the fund and I will never forget how George came through for me with Yankee memorabilia for this cause.

While the old school where George coached is gone the spirit lives on and we have an Aquinas Museum above the Holy Cross church and soup kitchen. The family, sons, daughters, grandchildren and wife are invited to visit the museum when in Columbus.

God bless you all.
July 16, 2010
George will be missed, he was a giant among men.His actions whether you liked him or not were all for the better. I had the privelage of meeting him a few times and he went out of his both times to ask me what I thought of the Yanks, and being a life long Yankee fan I told him " I would not have it any other way" and he smiled and shook my hand and said thanks. we lost a legacy but the Steinbrenner family has lost their Patriarch! Thanks BOSS you will not be forgotten!!
July 16, 2010
As a kid, born and raised in Tampa, Mr. Steinbrenner had a huge influence on me and his principles continue to shape who I am today. He was so striking in appearance, and unbelievably generous with gifts and time that he gave to Tampa youths. Although, the boys would try to take up most of his attention when he visited, he allowed me (when I was 10 or 11)an audience as he listened carefully while I argued the case that I was a better player than most of the young men who played for the Yankees. Needless to say he didn't buy that, but he continued to encourage me in my sports endeavors and to be a winner in every aspect of my life! So, to me, Mr. Steinbrenner was and will always be a winner, a hero and a man who made me feel privileged to grow up in Tampa. I extend my deepest sympathy to the Steinbrenner Family during this time of sadness, and express my sincere gratitude for the sacrifices each of you must have made in order to share this wonderful man with all of us.
July 16, 2010
Thank you for all the pleasure I have gotten from rooting for the Yankees in the various series since you came on board. You and your family have my sincere sympathy and prayers.
July 16, 2010
We pray for the safe passage and harbor of George's spirit. I will never forget playing in the Culver alumni basketball games with Moose and you.

You ran the race. You fought the good fight. Now, rest in peace and know that the Yankee organization is in good hands with your sons. My deepest sympathy to your entire family.
July 16, 2010
Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner!!!!
July 16, 2010
To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

It is very sad that we lost 2 legends today but we can at least say Thank You for all the greatest years you have given us( the Fans of NY). People ask me how I can be a Yankee fan living here in New Mexico. Well I tell them I grew up watching the Yankees play during the fifties and up to today. Loved all the greats they produced and the ones now who carry the pinstripe tradition. The Boss made the Yankees exciting, made them winners, and the envy of all sports.

May you rest in peace Boss.

Being born and brought up in CT, we were Yankee fans way before "The Boss", he changed the standards of the game and made it oh so competitive. Living in the Tampa Bay area the past 22 yrs, I've heard many stories of how well Mr. Steinbrenner supported this community. My deepest condolences to the entire Steinbrenner family and a great thank you to "The Boss" for helping make Baseball, America's past time and for giving so freely to those who needed some help!
July 15, 2010
Thank you to Mr. Steinbrenner for the remarkable legacy you have left for us. You were a true visionary and you will never be forgotten, nor replaced. May you rest in peace and be the Yankee angel in the outfield.
July 15, 2010
To Mr. Steinbrenner's sister, Judy: Over the years, with your brother's phenomenal success, I have wondered whether you and other family members were part of his circle, and now I read that he stayed close. After 55 years from our shared year on the 5th floor at Pembridge dorm, NU, I can see your discrete smile when you mentioned "Brother George". There is rich thesis material for all of your grandchildren in the Steinbrenner history. Lucinda Boyd, WCA&S 1959

It was March 1, 1996. The excitement was too much to bear. A Yankee fan all me life, I was at the opening game at Legend's Field - the new spring training home of the NY Yankees. I went with my good friend and “brother” James (Jimmy) Palamara, a Yankee fan his whole life too.
Life was good. It could not have been any better.
I moved to Florida in the middle of the “No Name Storm” in 1993 after graduating from Penn State.
A few years later an article appeared in the St Pete Times. It was a picture of the “Scooter” (Phil Rizzuto) and the headline said, “Be Part of the Legend”. The article continued, “the Yankees are bringing their spring training home to the Tampa area”. I stood up without hesitation and wrote a check to the NY Yankees.
A year later I was sitting at the newest, biggest spring training facility in the majors. All the legends were there: Whitey Ford, Yogi Berra, Clete Boyer, the Scooter and many more.
The next part of opening day came when Jimmy started getting antsy, he can’t sit still. But I, on the other hand, wasn’t moving - just enjoying the introductions and the start of the game. Jimmy had to get up and check out this awesome new stadium. I followed. Still staring at the field in wonderment knowing my beloved team was here and going to be here every spring. We walked the stadium checking everything out. The beer stands, food venders, souvenirs, etc. We then decided to walk down the stairs in front of the stadium to see the monuments. I’m uneasy because I’m missing the game, but now enjoying the plaques of Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and DiMaggio.
As I’m taking in the tradition of the Yankees, in the distance an elevator door opens. Jimmy says “There’s the Boss !”. “NO WAY”, I said. Just behind us are 10,000 people in His new stadium and George Steinbrenner (alone) is walking toward Jimmy and me. I normally would take it easy, breath deep and ask for an autograph. But, I had Jimmy with me. And with all the Brooklyn accent possible, Jimmy yells “George, take a picture with my ‘brother’”. It was loud enough to compete with the demolition of the Big Sombrero which was still just across Dale Mabry. Mr. Steinbrenner just smiled, walked closer, signed my poster the Yankees gave out to all the fans coming into the stadium that day (an artists rendering of Legends Field) and put his arm around me. CLICK.
There it was, The Boss and Me! Forever hanging in any house I will live in for the rest of my life, (as well as Detzi’s Tavern just outside of Bangor, PA). He shook my hand and said something nice that I wish I could remember, but was too in awe to do so.
That’s when this story REALLY started.
Mr. Steinbrenner turned away as did I, thinking this was the greatest day for me in my Yankee-loving history.
At this time a lady with 3 young children walked across the sidewalk and past the monuments. She did not know Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle or DiMaggio. Her kids just wanted to go to a ball game. They looked like they were not so fortunate. Honestly, down on their luck. I followed slowly behind because of the curiosity of Mr. Steinbrenner who had noticed the very same lady. They went up to the ticket window of a sold out game being followed by a curious Yankee fan and a man with a blue blazer and white turtle neck. Obviously the game was sold out and in the third inning. She and the children just turned and walked away. The man in the blue blazer and white turtleneck stopped them and asked if they had gotten tickets to the game. She sheepishly said, “no”. The kids looked disappointed but were somehow comfortable, maybe used to disappointment. This man in the blue blazer who had followed them to the window asked them to hold on. They had no idea who he was, but I did, and followed with respectful distance to see what was happening. The man in the blue blazer and white turtleneck took them to the ticket window and instructed the person behind the glass to print out 4 tickets for the next 3 games at the new stadium. The person behind the glass did and handed them to Mr. Steinbrenner. I guess I don’t need to tell the rest or this story.
I will probably never know where that lady is or her 3 kids for the rest of my life. But I DO know that George Steinbrenner changed 5 lives that day. The 5th, by the way, is mine.
Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, and DiMaggio are important to me.
Peace, Happiness, Giving and Love are the most important.

Being an old school Red Sox fan, I never thought I'd shed a tear for a Yankee. I was wrong. Even from beyond, you still managed to stir my emotions one last time. With a heavy heart and a profound sadness, I tip my cap to you, sir. I'll remember "Big Stein" as larger than life, the most worthy competitor, and the epitome of the New York Yankees. May you rest in peace.

I am a 44 year old red sox fan and i always respected The Boss because he did everything he could to win...i know of no other owner in pro sports who would truly spare no expense to win a championship like he did and the yankees were lucky to have him, he resurrected the historic franchise of Ruth, Gehrig and Dimaggio...I have never heard of a owner who wanted to win more than him and being a Yankee was very important to George, he knew they werent just another pro team

My family and I are all die-hard Yankee fans. We'll be forever greatful to Mr. Steinbrenner for restoring the Yankees back to the Champs they are today. He brought pride and class back to the organization...and changed the game forever!

Since his passing, I've read such incredible stories about his acts of kindness. What a compassionate human being he was...he sincerely cared about others! Truly one of a kind! What a glorious moment in Heaven it must have been when Bob Sheppard's voice rang out loud and clear, announcing his arrival...I can just hear it now..."Now arriving at the pearly gates, the Boss, George Steinbrenner, the Boss". My thoughts and prayers are with you Steinbrenner family...May God provide you with the comfort that only He can!

TO THE STEINBRENNER FAMILY:

OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES ARE WITH YOU AT THIS TIME; WHAT A GREAT MAN & A LEGEND. MAY HE REST IN PEACE. GOD BLESS HIM.
July 15, 2010
TO MY DEAREST FAMILY, SOME THINGS I'D LIKE TO SAY...BUT 1ST OF ALL, TO LET YOU KNOW THAT I ARRIVED OKAY. I'M WRITING THIS FROM HEAVEN, HERE I DWELL WITH GOD ABOVE; HERE, THERE'S NO MORE TEARS OF SADNESS; HERE IS JUST ETERNAL LOVE. PLEASE DO NOT BE UNHAPPY JUST BECAUSE I'M OUT OF SIGHT...REMEMBER THAT I'M WITH YOU EVERY MORNING, NOON & NIGHT. THAT DAY I HAD TO LEAVE YOU, MY LIFE ON EARTH WAS THROUGH...GOD PICKED ME UP & HUGGED ME & HE SAID, "I WELCOME YOU." "IT'S GOOD TO HAVE YOU BACK AGAIN; YOU WERE MISSED WHILE YOU WERE GONE. AS FOR YOUR DEAREST FAMILY, THEY'LL BE HERE LATER ON. I NEED YOU HERE BADLY; YOU'RE PART OF MY PLAN. THERE'S SO MUCH THAT WE HAVE TO DO TO HELP OUR MORTAL MAN." GOD GAVE ME A LIST OF THINGS THAT HE WISHED FOR ME TO DO & FOREMOST ON THE LIST, WAS TO WATCH & CARE FOR YOU. WHEN YOU LIE IN BED AT NIGHT, THE DAYS CHORES PUT TO FLIGHT, GOD & I ARE CLOSEST TO YOU...IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. WHEN YOU THINK OF MY LIFE ON EARTH & ALL THOSE LOVING YEARS, BECAUSE YOU ARE ONLY HUMAN, THEY ARE BOUND TO BRING YOU TEARS, BUT DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CRY, IT DOES RELIEVE THE PAIN. REMEMBER THERE WOULD BE NO FLOWERS UNLESS THERE WAS SOME RAIN. I WISH THAT I COULD TELL YOU ALL THAT GOD HAS PLANNED, BUT IF I WERE TO TELL YOU, YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND. BUT ONE THING IS FOR CERTAIN, THOUGH MY LIFE ON EARTH IS OVER, I'M CLOSER TO YOU NOW THAN I EVER WAS BEFORE. THERE ARE MANY ROCKY ROADS AHEAD OF YOU & MANY HILLS TO CLIMB; BUT TOGETHER WE CAN DO IT BY TAKING 1 DAY AT A TIME. IT WAS ALWAYS MY PHILOSOPHY & I'D LIKE IT FOR YOU TOO, THAT AS YOU GIVE UNTO THE WORLD, THE WORLD WILL GIVE TO YOU.IF YOU CAN HELP SOMEBODY WHO'S IN SORROW & IN PAIN, THE YOU CAN SAY TO GOD AT NIGHT, "MY DAY WAS NOT IN VAIN." AND NOW I AM CONTENTED, THAT MY LIFE HAS BEEN WORTHWHILE, KNOWING AS I PASSED ALONG THE WAY, I MADE SOMEBODY SMILE." SO IF YOU MEET SOMEBODY WHO IS SAD & FEELING LOW, JUST LEND A HAND TO PICK HIM UP, AS ON YOUR WAY YOU GO. WHEN YOU'RE WALKING DOWN THE STREET, AND YOU'VE GOT ME ON YOUR MIND; I'M WALKING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS ONLY HALF A STEP BEHIND. AND WHEN IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO GO....FROM THAT BODY TO BE FREE, REMEMBER YOU'RE NOT GOING.....YOU'RE COMING HOME TO ME.

To the Steinbrenner Family, our thoughts and prayers are with you and Mr. Steinbrenner. I didnt know him personally but my father worked for the American Ship Building Company and Sailed on both the "Henry Steinbrenner" and the "George Steinbrenner". I have a letter in my office from Mr Steinbrenner to my father which was writtin as if my Father was the most important man at that moment. My father always said that he was a man of honor and was always very interested in how my Dad was doing. I believe that and feel very saddened by his passing.
July 15, 2010
George you are truly the greatest owner of all sports and that includes globally even if one doesn't know other owners in the world that owns a team. Thank you for giving your heart, showing your pain when you would lose, as us fans. Thank you for continuing all your hard work. I know many Yankee fans and non Yankee fans know you really cared about the average fan. The little people.

You will sorely be missed and your legacy, drive and vision will live forever as the Boss' way. You will be remembered just as much as Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio and all the legendary Yankees and even maybe more for what you have transcended in this franchise that not even the Yankee Greats would ever imagine.

I know the Yankee Greats are thanking you in Heaven George.

I truly give you an infinite amount of Thank you's

July 14, 2010
To the Steinbrenner family -- I had the honor of meeting your dad at the original dedication of Steinbrenner Stadium at MIT in the 70's. Your gift to the MIT community was a wonderful and much-needed addition to the MIT campus, and remains one of my favorite places to attend sporting events...

Mr. Steinbrenner always made it a point to bring players over to meet with the students and describe their experiences. The Steinbrenner family will always be a part of the MIT community.

Without this gift, it would not have been possible for a bunch of rabble-rousing students to start the MIT Football Team -- I just wish we had known how much he loved the sport!
July 14, 2010

The world has lost a person who brought so much joy to us Yankee fans. He had his own way of managing, but he always gave 110% and expected others to do the same. In 1977 he brought the Yankees to UNC, Chapel Hill, NC and my husband, our two sons & I were fortunate enough to have tickets in his box. We sat right in front of him, he tapped me on the shoulder, introduced himself to us, and we had a really nice conversation with him. That was the first thing all of us thought about when we heard he had passed. Our sons are now 43 & 40, but what a nice memory he gave to the four of us! My heart goes out to his family.
July 14, 2010
As a Yankee fan from the late fifties, I will never forget your strong dedication to the team and its accomplishment. It has certainly serve as a catalyst for those who seek perfection. My condolences to the family.

Right or wrong Free Agency and George Steinbrenner changed the game of modern baseball. When Reggie Jackson came to the Yankees in 1977 I decided to leave the Red Sox Nation and Yaz. After the heartbreaking loss in 1975 World Series and the fact that many of the big name Red Sox players were leaving because of Free Agency it was time to follow the Boss and watch the boys in the Bronx have fun. Thank you for the many memories.

I had the pleasure of being at Hank Steinbrenner's wedding. Therefore, meeting George. "The Boss". The next day called me by my name. I was then in "awe" of him. Later, sat next to him looking at the family video's and he was so kind and wanting everyone to feel welcome. I went away with an admiration for him and his family. Yes, we all make mistakes; but how many of us will turn around; correct it and go on. He gave me an autographed cap that weekend. I put the cap on top of my TV with all the news trying to do something to show respect. I talked a lot to Hank the day of his wedding - so Hank - I will be praying for you and all the family. I respect the Steinbrenners. I was with Al Hirt. Gwen Phillips (Campbell)

To the Steinbrenner Family
I am truly sorry for your loss and to the New York Yankees Organization & Fans. You had a great owner and great run with this owner who was truly dedicated to the Yankees and the City of New York itself.
Owners like this do not come along that often so you have to enjoy the good times as they go. May George rest in peace, but may his spirit and hardwork be inspired by all who share an interest in baseball and life itself.
I am a Boston Red Sox Fan but there is nothing better than a Yankees/Red Sox series anyday, George knew this and made it better by being there in person, This I will truly miss.
Whenever you walk into your stadium, take time and remember him fondly and with pride.....Respectfully... Bernie Fallon... Boston Mass.

My heart goes out to the Steinbrenner family. Nine years ago, your dad, Mr. Steinbrenner offered me a ride. I was stranded when my car ran out of gas on Swann Avenue in Tampa, FL. I had my two year old, and my newborn with me on our first official outing. Mr. Steinbrenner came by to offer me a ride. I refused, but thought, "He looks familiar." Within minutes the black BMW reappeared, and an elderly gentleman got out of his car and offered me a ride again. He said, "I really want to help you. I can't bear the thought of something happening to you out here. Please let me help you." I then recognized Mr. Steinbrenner and asked him if indeed he was Mr. Steinbrenner. I happily, readily, gratefully accepted his kind offer. This was a selfless random act of kindness, all done on the opening day of spring training. Everybody who loves to hate the Yankees is softened when they hear of the kindness that Mr. Steinbrenner extended to me that day, and it is my favorite story to tell. I will never forget him. I pray for you, Steinbrenners, in your grief that God will minister comfort and healing to you.

Sincerely,

Gay Nyberg

my sympathy & prayers to the steinbrenner family
July 14, 2010
To the entire Steinbrenner family: I just want to say that I am very very sorry for your loss. Up in Jersey, it's been raining most of the day on and off since George's death was announced; fitting since the reaction upon hearing about it was shock and then sadness, with the rain representing the sadness. I never had the fortune to meet Mr. Steinbrenner personally and I wish I did. Watching a skit where he lampooned himself on SNL, became one of my favorites, along with the master card commercials he did in the late '90s and the commercial with Jason Alexander for All Star Voting during the season after the '96 championship, showed a side most of us were not privy to have seen before, a humorous down-to earth person who doesn't take himself too seriously. That's what I liked the most about him along with his charitableness. I held a lot of respect for Mr. Steinbrenner, for someone with the tenacity that he showed throughout the 35 years he spent as team owner, he has shown that he's worthy of it. My condolences are with the entire Yankee family during this time. My heart goes out to you all and you are in my thoughts and prayers. Tonight a new star will be shining in the heavens above, that star is none other than Mr. George Steinbrenner. Rest in Peace.

With the deepest sympathy,

Ms. Sarah E. Nelson

To the Steinbrenner Family,

Mr. Steinbrenner, no matter what others say, those that truly knew him knew he was 95% Mr. Rogers & 5% Oscar the Grouch. :o)

A man like Mr. Steinbrenner only comes around so often in this world - fight for what his true passion was, gratitude for what was given to him in this lifetime and love always to his family and friends.

The world has lost a true hero, but most of all, you have lost a Husband, a Father, A Grandfather and a true friend.

May his voice never go unheard...

Rest in peace Mr. Steinbrenner, and may your spirit shine thru during this time of remembrance.

Warm Regards,
JoAnn

I would like to express my sincere sympathy to the Steinbrenner Family. From all the things I have read over the years he was a very kind and giving man. When you are feeling sad just remember that our heavenly father will give you the peace that passes all understanding and when you feel that you are alone remember that he is always with you. I would like to leave you with this scripture found at Isaiah 41:10. I recently lost my mother and oldest brother within 7 months of each other and I find that this scripture helps me when I am feeling alone and sad.

I remember George Steinbrenner as a sensitve, caring individual. When I told him that my father-in-law was a "big time" baseball fan going back to the St Louis Cardinals of the 1930's, he sent him an actual Yankees warm-up jacket. Frank Yankunas proudly wore that jacket given to him by Mr. Steinbrenner for 20 years. We found it in his nursing home closet when he died in 1998. Right or Wrong, George always did what he thought was right for the Yankees. What he did was not only good for the Yankees, but great for baseball. He was a strong willed man who made no room for excuses. What most people don't know realize is, he was just as charitable as he was driven. And those who were touched by his philanthropic heart were also usually restricted from revealing their benefit at his request. George was a good man. May the same be said about all of us when we pass. May God rest his soul and bring comfort to his family.
July 13, 2010
RIP Mr. Steinbernner You were A True American Icon The Tampa Bay Area Love's You Very Much As Well As The People In New York Thank You For Everything You Have Done.
July 13, 2010
Right or Wrong, George always did what "he thought" was best. May God rest his soul.

July 13, 2010
Thank you for a wonderful man and family that have given so much to our community. Our lives are richer because of you.

My favorite rememberance of him was in his tenure as Chairman of the State Fair Authority. He was out picking up trash one day during the fair and someone approached him and asked if he was George Steinbrenner and his comment, "If I was George Steinbrenner would I be picking up the trash!" He did his work for all of us so unassumingly. We were blessed to have him in Tampa and all need to remember his contributions.

To the Steinbrenner Family:

Rest assured, your husband, father and grandfather resides in Heaven today. The Boss had his moments -- we all do -- but he did so much, much more than his critics (of whom I was one) fully realized until we did the research or listened to the stories about his benevolence with not only his past players and employees but also every day people. He touched lives. He made a difference. He got it. God has a special place reserved for people like George Michael Steinbrenner -- with Him for all eternity. God bless you all and don't mourn too long -- there are games in life that need to be won, and The Boss would want you knocking in the winning run like Derek Jeter and getting the save like Mariano Rivera.

23rd Psalm
The Lord is my Shepherd

The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul:
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name' sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;
Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
Thou annointest my head with oil; My cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the House of the Lord forever.

I am 19 years old, and your passing, along with Bob Sheppard's, and the retirement of Ken Griffey Jr, are signaling that 2010 is the year that my childhood baseball memories end, and adult baseball memories begin. You built the Yankees of the late '90s, the teams of my childhood. My condolences go out to the Steinbrenner family, and may you rest in peace.

My condolences to the Steinbrenner family. "The Boss" brought the Yankee Pride back when he purchased the Yankees in 73. Mr. Steinbrenner was also a very generous individual who provided scholarships for students and employees and donated to St. Joseph's hospital. May you rest in peace Mr. Steinbrenner. George was a wonderful man. .A real winner. He will be missed
July 13, 2010
I always liked Mr. Steinbrenner because he bought the Yankees and was not satisfied until he brought them to the pinnacle of the baseball world. When people think of the Yankees they think of winning , class, the best and Mr. Steinbrenner was a big part of why people thought that way. Having been a Yankee fan since the days of Yogi and the Mick I wish Mr. Steinbrenner Godspeed and if there is baseball in Heaven I am sure he will be involved in building a winner. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family.
July 13, 2010

My condolences to the Steinbrenner family the Yankee organization and loyal Yankee fans.
July 13, 2010
I remember being in Yankee Stadium for my first baseball game in 1977. I couldnt get over how large the stadium was, and how 'big' everything seemed to be. From the Boom of the voice of God (Bob Sheppard) to the yell of hot dog vendors selling their wares, I was amazed. George Steinbrenner was there that day. My dad showed him to me through our giant binoculars. I was in awe. There, was the boss. When I was still playing, Mr. Steinbrenner and those he hired to wear pinstripes were heros to me. I wanted to be like them in the worst way. I always played hard, and had the same desire to win as he did. Alot of who I am today derives from those rolemodels I had that wore pinstripes...chief among them, George Steinbrenner. Thank you Dad for letting me walk down that path and making me who I am, and thank you George for helping shape who I am today and for helping to teach me to do everything to the very best of my ability and be a winner.
July 13, 2010
As a member of Red Sox Nation, I always appreciated the enthusiasm that Mr. Steinbrenner brought to the Yankee/Red Sox rivalry. No one will ever forget the Rte 95 corridor trash talking over the years between both teams. In the end though it is just a game. Regardless of what people say, there is always respect. The success of MLB over the years has a lot to do with Mr. Steinbrenner. His mark on the game will forever be remembered. My condolences go out to all of his family. Rest in peace.
July 13, 2010
You gave so much to the Tampa Bay area, you will be missed!! Mr. Steinbrenner was the only reason why I never booed the Yankees when they came to the Trop- God Bless the greatest owner in baseball history....GO Rays
July 13, 2010
My husband turned me into a NYY fan in 1996 and we were able to enjoy the 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009 World Series. There is nothing in this world like it!!!! It is a bit difficult though defending the World Champs when we live in Chicago flying our WC 2009 flag amidst White Sox and Cub fans. Phillip will defend his mighty Yankees till his last dying breath. Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner for all the excitement, joy, and fun all these years - your legacy will live on forever in Yankee history. Go Yankees once more in 2010.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief. May your memories bring you comfort.
July 13, 2010
George Steinbrenner's passing just days after the iconic Bob Sheppard makes me think of the odd juxtaposition of these two individuals. Surely George's bombast was tempered by his late developing mellowness which turned him into a sympathetic figure in NY sports. He did mean well and will be remembered for his passion and commitment to excellence. Rest in peace,George. Bob is about to announce your arrival through the pearly Gates. I do hope God is a Yankees fan.
July 13, 2010
An Icon in the sports world has left us today. What a man this was,tough..generous and most of all a winner with his family, friends and beloved New York Yankees..Rest In peace Sir...you will live on forever in the house you built.

July 13, 2010
Mr. Steinbrenner kept the winning tradition going for the Yankees for a long time. He was a great and colorful owner. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he put the money back into the team and for that, I will always remember him as one of the greatest MLB owners of all time. God bless and keep him. He will never be forgotten.
July 13, 2010

Tampa has lost a great man today. I am not talking about the baseball side but the other side of him that I keep hearing about today. Our city and other cities in the United States are a better place because of his generosity. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May he rest in peace.
July 13, 2010
The Boss helped us build our ports. He was American Ship Building. He gave to our schools (AHN) and he built the Children's wing at St. Joseph's Hospital. He rescued the State Fair when no one else could. He evolved baseball. He was deeply involved in our community and took notice of the people in it who were less fortunate than himself. His spirit lifted us all and we will miss him.
July 13, 2010
You were a great business man. As a youngster, we shared a story with you about the horrible time we had when the Yankees played at Shea stadium (when Yankee stadium was bing remodeled). You sent us 4 tickets to another Yankee game....I was so impressed and have been a George Steinbrenner fan ever since. Our prayers are with your family in this difficult time.
July 13, 2010
All of us here in Red Sox Nation join with our fellow fans in New York and all over the world in remembering this great ambassador of the game. His shoes cannot be filled. Deepest sympathies to the Steinbrenner and Yankee families.

July 13, 2010
My thoughts and prayers are with the Steinbrenner family as well the Yankee family. Mr. Steinbrenner is the only owner I have ever known for the Yankee's and what an AMAZING one he was. Our family is four generation fans and I know with the loss of The BOSS, it will not be the same. There is only one thing to do, win #28 this year for The BOSS!
July 13, 2010
I'll never forget how kind this giant of a man was to me, a young woman who just wanted an autograph from the owner of the greatest sports franchise in history. He was attending the Baseball Hall Of Fame Inductions in Cooperstown, and brought the Yankees along to play in the annual Hall of Fame game against the Atlanta Braves the following day (late 80s), when we talked about The Scooter, Phil Rizutto getting into the Hall of Fame. He encouraged, nope he admonished, me to write the sportswriters association and encourage them to vote Rizutto in. He was very happy to sign for me and it's a coveted autograph and a cherished memory. Thanks Boss!! Now you're with the REAL Boss, Jesus!
To the Steinbrenner Family-May God through His Son Jesus Christ give you His peace during this time of mourning. I'm praying for you all!!
July 13, 2010

it took an outsider to come to New York and return the team to greatness. This was incredibly hard for New Yorkers to swallow. Some never accepted him but they all owe him a deep debt of gratitude.
July 13, 2010
Although I've never ment Mr. Steinbrenner, I shed a tear today , growing up in the slums Connecticut i'm a huge Yankees fan for over 40 yrs... So I'm here to say the tears are not from what he's given to baseball , but what he's given to people like myself whom has grown up with nothing and not knowing where our next meal is coming from , I love a person who gives , and he was one of those people. So I say thanks , and one day I hope that GOD blesses me so that I can give to people one day too !
Yours truly , John Reynolds , Norcross, Ga.
July 13, 2010
Heaven is now a better place.

You gave so much of yourself to us, thank you. Other owners should only do half as much as you did for this community. You never asked for anything - just gave from your heart.

July 13, 2010
I HAVE FOLLOWED THE YANKEES SINCE I WAS 10-11 YEARS OLD. I AM NOW 73, STILL A DIE HARD YANKEE FAN. IAM A RETIRED BUSINESS OWNER. MR. STEINBRENNER ALWAYS PUT THE FAN ( CUSTOMER ) FIRST. HE WANTED THE BEST PRODUCT AVAILABLE FOR HIS FANS. WINNING WAS EVERYTHING TO GEORGE, AS IT SHOULD BE. THERE IS A VOID IN THE YANKEE ORGANIZATION WITH HIS PASSING. HOPEFULLY THE CHIP DID NOT FALL TOO FAR FROM THE BLOCK ( IN THE TURNING OVER THE YANKEES TO HIS SONS AND DAUGHTERS. I FEEL THE YANKEES ARE IN GOOD HANDS. I ADMIRED AND RESPECTED MR. STEINBRENNER FROM THE BEGINNING OF HIS OWNERSHIP OF THE YANKEES, AND STILL HAVE UTMOST RESPECT FOR HIS LEGACY...

He came to dutchess county,ny many times. i wish he would have built something here. i was able to attend a hockey game at Culver Military Academy in Indiana a few years ago. mr. steinbrenner helped them greatly. Culver produces great male and female students. the Steinbrenner family knows first hand.

July 13, 2010
To the Steinbrenner family..my deepest sympathies..I met Mr. Steinbrenner a few years ago when President Clinton was in town and my sister Linda and I were working crowd control..Mr. Steinbrenner was so gracious that I took a picture with him and he sent my son Darin a Yankees baseball cap and jacket..what a nice man...
July 13, 2010
As a life-long Red Sox fan, I naturally hated the Yankees. However, without Steinbrenner, this rivalry would be nothing. He created an Empire which became the standard for all of sports to try to follow, with none coming close to the titles, championships, fear, love and respect that became Yankees Universe. The Sox win in '04 would have been hollow had we not beaten the best. Steinbrenner deserves our respect and our sympathies go to his family and Yankees fans. He will be missed, and this rivalry will never be the same. Thank you, Mr. Steinbrenner, for creating a standard of excellence for all of sports.
Merra-Lee Morrison
July 13, 2010
There were many times a little league team's club house would be robbed, or fire destroyed kid's facilities and mysteriously generous funds would arrive to help these kids. The Tampa Bay area had a real angel in the way Mr. Steinbrenner helped our entire community. Thank you.

I played Cub Scout softball with Hank Steinbrenner in Bay Village, Ohio. George came to the games to watch us. When our city's Huntington Playhouse burned down, George paid for it to be rebuilt and even bought a row of seats. When I was a Cub Scout, George took us to Cleveland Indians games, gave us dinner behind the outfield, and had some players come out and sign autographs. George went to school with my brother in law, Howard Nickel. When Howard didn't remember to bring his lunch, George would buy Howard a hot lunch. Howard never forgot that. I once went to the Steinbrenner's house when was a kid to have lunch with Hank. When I was in Bay High School, our band played for the christening of one of George's ships built by the American Shipbuilding Company. George was also good friends with my dad, Judge Harry Pickering. God Bless him. He was a true humanitarian - a side many people never knew.
July 13, 2010
My deepest sympathy to the Steinbrenner

In 2003 I was the Manager of the Year at a Resort in Colorado Springs. Being an avid Yankee Fan all my life I received a trip to Yankee Staidum to watch game 6 of the World Series with the Florida Marlins. My Boss and I were lucky and got tickets to sit in Mr. Steinbrenner's box. Mr. Steinbrenner greeted us at the elevator and could not have been a more gracious gentleman to some total strangers from Colorado Springs. I will always remain a loyal Yankee fan, but I will always remember a kind, gentle, gracious man named George Steinbrenner. Rest in peace Mr. Steinbrenner.

I have always been interested in news about the Yankees, because the first Major League game I ever attended , in 1960, was at old Yankee Stadium. It was against my beloved White Sox and they won that day. Howvever, since that day I have kept my eye on what the Yankees were doing.

George Steinbrenner provided lots of stories and made the public pay attention to baseball in New York and the rest of the country. George Steinbrenner, had at sense of humour he never seemed to miss a chance to make fun of himself, in interviews and commericals .

His genorosity will be rmember for a long time to come.

My condolences to the family.
Thanks for the memories.
