GEARTY, Herbert V. 86, of Norwood, passed away at home, Wednesday, April 08, 2015 surrounded by his family. Born in Medford, he was the son of the late George and Annette (Surrette) Gearty. Herbert was the beloved husband of the late Margaret (Sparrow) Gearty ; the loving father of Paul Gearty of Norwood, Peter Gearty of Walpole, Martha and her husband, Christopher Griffin, Patrick Gearty and his wife, Maureen, Daniel Gearty and his wife, Robyn, all of Norwood, Brendan Gearty and his wife Sharon of Glendale, AZ, Margaret and her husband, Christopher Osborne, Brian Gearty and his wife, Cyprina, all of Norwood, Jonathan Gearty and his wife, Debbie of W. Hartford, CT, and the late Joseph Gearty; the dear brother of Barbara Pawlick of Cranford, NJ and her late husband, William, Arthur Gearty and his wife, Marcia, Joanne and her husband Greg Gillis, all of Norwood and the late George and Robert Gearty, Margaret O'Neil, Harold Gearty, Annette Hagerty and Raymond Gearty; the cherished grandfather of 31 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and the uncle of many nieces and nephews. Herbert served in the Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict and was a graduate of Bentley College of Accounting and Finance. He also graduated from Northeastern University School of Business and the Brown Graduate School of Banking. He retired as Vice Chairman of the Board and Comptroller of the Union Warren Savings Bank of Boston where he worked for over 35 years. He was a member and past president, of the Boston Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Club, which was the oldest luncheon club in the country. He was a life member of the Norwood Elks, American Legion and Knights of Columbus. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family at his second home of 42 years in Lyman, ME. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 13, at 9:00 AM at the Gillooly Funeral Home, 126 Walpole St., NORWOOD, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 547 Washington St., Norwood. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, Norwood. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 12, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Ecumenical Food Pantry, 150 Chapel St., Norwood, MA 02062.

Mr. Gearty, which is what I always called him, was one of the few officers @ Union Warren who always made his employees comfortable by expressing to them that he knew exactly how and what they were feeling in their position at the bank. Why? Because he had been there and had never forgotten what it was like to serve the public and to be all we could be. He set a fine example for others to follow. He was a mentor to many, including myself.
