To My Friend Jerry,

"What moves through me is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. I may not understand why you had to leave us so soon, or why you left before I was ready to say good-bye, but little by little, I begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave me memories too beautiful to forget"

I remember that you lived for many years on Shirley Street next to the Big Schull and that you had memorized very many of the Rabbi's prayers and the Cantor's music which you could recite word for word if asked,

I remember in the 40's and 50's that we spent so many hours hanging out together as kids playing on the old narrow gage railroad bed that ran behind your house.

I remember that after having moved to Florida in 1958 with my family and not ever expecting to see you again that in the early 60's during my 4-year stint in the Air Force, mostly at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi Mississippi I walked into the base snack bar one day and nearly tripped over you as you were standing there in line to get some lunch that day.

I remember that after having moved back to the Boston area with Susan and our two children in 1975 there came a time for the first Winthrop Beach gang reunion where you and I renewed our friendship.

And I remember that from that from that time on we stayed in touch almost weekly and remained fast friends through many emails, reunions, lunches and even a chance meeting at the Boston VA Medical Center in Jamaica Plain where we were both being treated.

As friends for well over 70 years, I will miss you Jerry

Your Friend,

Richy Slater
