Dear Murphy family,
I was very sorry to hear of Dick's passing; condolences to you all. Since hearing the news the memories have come rushing in...
Two of Newton's finest, and funniest. Dickie Murphy and Jackie Brennan, long-time partners on the NPD, were a cross between The Odd Couple and Starsky and Hutch. They served the City of Newton with distinction, raised their families in Newton with dedication, and answered the many demands of being dads. It wasn't always easy to be a cop's kid, but it is incredibly easy to be proud of our dads, who turned on the siren when we asked, let us borrow police uniforms for plays and Halloween, and taught us by example what responsibility, civic duty and hard work really mean. For every Murphy at school it seemed there was a Brennan in the same grade. We go back many years together, shared our dads with each other, and now we share in your grief, as we mourn Dickie's passing. I'm very sorry for your loss, and I imagine Dickie was warmly welcomed into that big roll call in the sky.

For the time I've known Richard, he showed me love and compassion, who commanded attention with a fairness and what he felt he deserved not only for himself but others. He always insisted on making sure, when dining with him, that I was nourished but I was mostly nourished by his love and concern for my wellbeing. To his family, Fran et. al. I am sorry for your loss. To Richard, you've taught me so much of how to live and you are already missed...very much!
Lovingly forever, Jay J. Wright Boston, Ma.
