I'm a 69 year old married man. I saw Dr. Shulman for therapy, and occasional medication, for several years in the 1970's. I will always appreciate the guidance and wisdom he provided me, when I was a very insecure young adult.
I was not good about paying my therapy bill, and Dr. Shulman was perhaps too kind about that. We terminated our meetings with me still owing a considerable sum. That failing on my part bothered me for years. Finally, in 1992 I decided to take action: I estimated how much the bill would have been, and sent a check for that amount (this did not, however account for inflation, but as I said in my accompanying letter, it was what I could pay)
Dr. Shulman quickly sent me a thank you note. He offered that I could come in for a 20 year follow-up, humorously adding: "no charge this time". I did go to see him in 1995, and I was glad to express my gratefulness for his warm and caring expertise. We had a really great talk.
I recently went through some papers, and came across the letter he sent. I was somehow moved to check with Google, realizing full well what I might find, as much time has passed. I was saddened to learn of his passing just a week prior, but more importantly, I felt tremendous gratitude.
I sincerely hope that this offering is not too long or too personal, but rather that it serve to provide for Dr. Shulman's family, some level of comfort at a time of grief.
Thank you Dr. Shulman. May you rest in peace.
