That is sad to hear indeed, of Yosh's passing - but at age 93, and what a rich life! Yosh was very important to a then recent - 1950s -immigrant such as myself - class of 1954. But for coral-fevered Terry Matern's - junior year - love of Walt Whitman Yosh was my first connection not just to American but to world literature. His senior year survey was equal to a college's literary humanities course. Yosh introduced us to Joyce and we advanced to reading Finnegan's Wake, I once knew the Anna Livia Prurabelle section by heart, and became quite the Joycean for many years, which led me eventually to become a Peter Handke specialist. -
I started to write in English (I had been precocious in German), my first stories, in Josh's class. I then went on to work as an editor and translator for many years prior to a writing life that I hope will still see the completion not of the great American novel but of the monster novel Darlings & Monsters of the New York of the latter half of the last century.
Yosh and I managed to get back in touch and until a few years ago his response to work I sent him was actually too positive for someone who treasured critique from his peers. Michael Roloff
