Stanley Burgard Obituary

Stanley Michael Burgard, age 81, passed away on Dec. 23 at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital from complications of pneumonia brought on by treatment for lung cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Stanley was born on Aug. 17, 1931 in Towner, N.D. to Paul and Barbara Burgard, one of three children. He spent his childhood in Rugby, N.D. and graduated from Rugby High School in 1949. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1950 and served his entire duty onboard the USS Des Moines. He was honorably discharged in May 1954 and returned to Rugby. He immediately went to work for the Pierce County Tribune as a pressman. He would work in the printing and newspaper industry for the rest of his life with "ink running through his veins."

In 1955, he met Lois Zeiders and the two developed a love that led to over 56 years together. They were married on the 15th of September, 1956. They moved into their first home, which Stan helped build for them, in 1960. While living in Rugby, the first two of three sons were born – Michael in 1957 and Christopher in 1960. In 1961 they moved to Tioga, N.D. for Stan to work at the Tioga Tribune. In 1963 they moved to Livingston, Mont. where Stan worked at the Livingston Enterprise and their third son, Jeffrey, was born in 1964. Stan and Lois moved to Bozeman in January 1966 and found their true home.

Stan first took a job at Artcraft Printers then on April 1, 1967 he and a partner purchased the Gallatin County Tribune, the local weekly newspaper (later renamed Color World Printers). This purchase led to a 30+ year career in commercial printing. Bozeman became their home and Stan became involved in the community. As the owner and publisher of the weekly newspaper, Stan was well in-tune with the events and happenings of the area. Bozeman was much smaller during that time and Stan made sure he visited every business in town. Stan knew nearly everyone who owned a business and always enjoyed striking up a conversation with them. He was a people person, and he never met a person he didn't have something positive to say about.

Stan was active in the Bozeman community. He was a member of the Jaycees and then the Bozeman Lions Club, where he once served as president. He was recently presented with a certificate for 45 years of service. Stan was a member of the Riverside Country Club in the late 80s and 90s and served as the president in 1991. He was an avid bowler and was involved in league bowling for over 30 years at The Bowl.

Stan and Lois started camping with their three young children when they moved to Bozeman. Their first camping trips were the five of them sleeping in a tent in the Gallatin Canyon. After moving up to a camping trailer, Stan and Lois discovered Lake Shore Lodge at Ennis Lake. It took only one summer to realize this was the perfect place to spend the summers. The family spent nearly every summer weekend at Lake Shore Lodge for 20 years until Stan purchased land next to Lake Shore and had a cabin built. Stan and Lois spent summer weekends at the cabin for the next 24 years, and it would become a favorite place for their children and grandchildren to spend time outside and on the water.

He is survived by his wife, Lois; three sons: Michael (Lisa), Christopher (Sandi), and Jeff, all of Bozeman; his brother, Dan (Gloria); 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Barbara; and his sister, Irene.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at the Evangelical Free Church, 1701 S. 19th at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 14, 2013. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff of the Bozeman Deaconess Cancer Center, the compassionate nurses at Bozeman Deaconess, and Dr. Vlases for their care. Arrangements are provided by Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service, www.dokkennelson.com.
