Gene taught Joshua how to catch lobster and scuba at a very young age.Joshua would listen to
Gene and loved hanging around him.we have many memories of Gene but one i will always remember is in the keys.we were out in the boat ,I was on sitting on one side and mom was on the other,Gene was driving.i was looking around and looked back and gene was sleeping with his hand steady on the wheel.we talked about waking him up .....ah we will before we get to the next bridge, let him sleep.when we did wake him up he was still holding the wheel, boat going pretty straight, but he gave us the biggest smile/grin and we all started laughing. Anyone would have loved to have lived the way Gene did, he lived the lives of ten men and did trips people dream about doing.Gene will be missed but never be forgotten.Love you mom, he will always be with you and watch over you,Rob and Stacy Self

To the very best and bravest Brother and Uncle,Rest in Peace with the knowledge that Mom and I will keep you in our hearts and memories forever.Uncle Gene,I have so many wonderful memories of our adventures. You taught me many valuable things in life. Most importantly you always loved me for just being me.I always felt so safe with you and for a child that was afraid of everything that meant a lot! Mom will dearly miss her "Bubba" but we all know that you two are inseparable! Until we meet again at the river sweet man...
May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rains fall soft upon your fields
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand

My favorite memory of Gene is on December 25, 2001 when my son Jonathan took his first steps by his self into his uncle Gene's out stretched arms. I always enjoyed Gene telling his story's of fishing, hunting and diving. He was always telling Jonathan that he was going to make a hunter and fisherman out him when he got older. The last few years have been hard not being able to really visit with him and Bonny. I will always remember and love him.

frank, thank you.
gene lived on the water from a very young age. Florence and gene made a boat out of aluminum and would be gone all day.they used a safety pin as a hook. he had many accomplishments as a diver, but he knew how every fish moved from a young age. it was second nature.
what I know about my husband is he was a scrapper. he wanted to accomplish whatever he could. somehow he did. they don't make a lot of people like that anymore. one of the most wonderful happenings in genes life was tom sprengar asking gene to go on the trip to spain, along with dr. Elton, the eurices, leymon bott, mr. miller, etc. to go and march in a parade at bradentons sister city in genes 70s... priceless to him and to me watching those guys. I am sending his oil painting to the hernando Desoto society where I believe all oil paintings need to be at some point.
god bless.
he is always with me.

Having been close to Gene in the 60's & 70's I can attest to his being a great guy. We served many years on the De Soto Crewe and he and I were amongst the few who were referred to as the "Wrecking Crew". We had many fun times both in and out of De Soto. My company remodeled his house in Anna Maria when I lived a few blocks away. My thoughts and prayers are with the whole family.
