As a child, Van Cliburn was the first classical pianist I ever saw in concert. I heard him in my hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, everywhere else I could attend, and never missed a television appearance. His playing inspired me in my own piano studies and instilled in me a lifelong love of classical music. My family and I now live in rural Mississippi coincidentally less than a mile from a small country cemetery where his grandfather, Marshall Cliburn, is buried. A century ago, Mr. Cliburn, a local resident, donated a number of acres of land to construct a church camp which is still in operation today. When my son designed a garden spot around the camp sign for his Eagle Scout project, we sent Van Cliburn a photo of the area and an letter of explanation. Van himself wrote a very beautiful congratulatory letter to my son, mentioning his grandfather, and how touched he was about the connection. That letter and the recordings and memories of Van Cliburn's performances will forever be treasures to our family. A true gentleman, a one-of-a-kind musician, and a wonderful person with a heart of gold. Bravo, dear Van! We will love you forever.
