Mr. Calicchio was my teacher at Putney in 1981. He holds a special place in my heart because he was the only teacher I can remember who noticed that I was unhappy. I was falling behind in his class, so he took extra time to help me get caught up. He taught me to speed read, and I under his care, I made up a whole semester of work in history. I was so grateful that he saw potential in me while everyone else wouldn't. I wrote him sometime in 2017 to thank him for his work with me so long ago. He remembered me. I still have that letter. I am so glad I caught him before he died. He was a great person! Your family was blessed to have such a great person in your lives. Best, Sasha Austin ('82 but left early due to cow-induced exhaustion.)

I just read the news and it stole my breath away.
He taught at Putney, but try as I might, I never got to be a student in his class. But became a regular student of his at his table in the KDU.
David gave me my first copy of The World According to Garp. It changed the way I read books (having always been a reader of the old gothic novelists prior) and I find myself rereading that same battered paperback at least once a year even though many of the pages no longer are attached to the spine. (It is loved and held together by a big rubber band and I like to think he would like that, but would growl at my continued use of the run-on sentence.)
Thank you, David. I carry you with me through my life. You will be missed, but forever fondly remembered. And always with every new John Irving book read (and every old one reread) I will smile.

A gentleman and a friend.

Nancy, Rafaela & Gabriella, my heartfelt condolences on learning of David's passing. Reading tributes from students and others, the world was a better place for many because of him. You're in my thoughts and heart.
