Eugene G. Irwin, 84, slipped peacefully into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus, Monday, Jan. 20, 2014, at home.
Gene leaves behind his beloved wife of 57 years, Betsey; their three children, Sherri Oesterheld (Jerry) of Fredericksburg, Va., Gary Irwin of Wylie, Texas, and Linda McDonald (Andy) of Raleigh; his six grandchildren, Derek, Sean, Matt, Molly, Drew, and Ryan; and many special friends.
Gene grew up in Glenolden, Pa., graduated from Millersville College, served in the Korean War, taught biology and coached at Moorestown High School in New Jersey. He embarked on a successful 50-year career in sales and research at Schering-Plough Pharmaceutical Co. Throughout his life - in Mays Landing, Medford Lakes and Sunset Beach - Gene was an active church member, Rotarian, coach, referee, dad and granddad. He also served 16 years on the Medford Lakes and Lenape Regional School Boards. After retirement, he enjoyed golfing, chairing the Kiki Konstantinos Golf Open, attending his grandchildren's activities and traveling with Betsey. Recently, he and Betsey moved to River Landing, where they found new friends and a very caring community.
A service to celebrate Gene's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Calabash Presbyterian Church, 8820 Old Georgetown Road in Sunset Beach.
