a great coach has left us. Paul was successful with many teams through his career. I can remember when he coached LSU and had a Heisman trophy winner on his team. Billy Cannon. he was a great leader of men when he coached at army. well now he is coaching a much greater team now. I pray that our loving savior will grant peace and comfort to the coaches family during this time of sorrow. may you rest in peace coach.
Ann and Family, Every aspect of our backgrounds were totally opposite from each other, but from the first moment I met Paul at our Bible Study, I had a full sense of who he was as a man, as a Christian, and he responded to me in kind. I have never known any one like him, and don't expect ever to know such a man again. He taught me that in the Holy Spirit opposites may attract and abide with each other in fellowship. David Madden

I went into coaching for almost 20 years after college, and I hope that I was as inspirational to my players as he was to us. He brought me closer to God and coaching. Rest In Peace Coach. Heaven's stars are our lost loved ones watching over us. Sadly, we now have another star to gaze upon. FOREVER LSU - GEAUX TIGERS! Thank you Coach Dietzel.
This is Howard Luppi again. Sorry about the Class date of 1848 instead of 1948. Sometimes I feel like I may have graduated on that date. Paul and I were just a few days apart in birthdays. I was born August 27, 1924. Again, my apologies. Howard Luppi
I will always remember the spirit of Coach Dietzel and his many first class contributions to athletic facilities at South Carolina. He never lost to UNC and had a winning record vs Frank Howard. May Coach Dietzel rest in peace!
Steve , Mrs. Anne, and the rest of the Dietzel family: our sincerest and thoughtful prayers are with you and your extended family. When I talked to you, Steve, not 3 weeks ago, I did not imagine this occurance happening. I met your Dad and Mrs. Anne at a Shriners' event we hosted a few years ago. I am very sad for you Mrs. Anne and your family on Coach going to see our COACH in the Heavens. I did enjoy the time talking to him when I helped in getting the squirrels out of the attic a few years back. I can honestly say that coach always found the good things in life to talk about and that was great. He was also able to tell me every story that went with his collection of pictures in your home. I know that he will be missed by all that he touch but we all are better people because of him and I thank you for that.
Deeply sorry to hear of the passing of your father, Kathie. He was such a nice person. I know he will be missed
Thanks for the great memories RIP coach!
I am deeply saddened to hear the passing of Coach Dietzel. I had the privilege of being coached by him for 4 years at South Carolina. I always looked forward to his talks to us the evening before our games. the messages challenged us to think about how to live our lives as much as they were about the game the next day. I had the opportunity to play golf with General Westmorland a few times and I enjoyed his story about his conversation with President Kennedy concerning the West Point football team. President Kennedy asked General Westmorland "What are you going to do about the football team?" Mr. President, what would you like for me to do? Find and Hire the best football coach in the country. I hired Coach Paul Dietzel. Coach Dietzel will be missed but his influence will remain with me the rest of my life.
I was a student at USC his last three years as coach and athletic director. Coach Dietzel was a man of character and vision who planted the seeds to help the Gamecocks develop the facilities and program which are so successful today. God bless the Dietzel family!

Coach Dietzel was the first USC coach I remember as I became a Carolina fan. I didn't realize at the time what a special coach and man he was. Over the years I've grown to appreciate him more and more. Carolina was lucky to have him as coach.
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
RIP Coach! Kathie and I were friends way back when your family lived in Baton Rouge. I fondly remember the scrambled eggs and the "sandbox". I'm so sorry for your loss. He was a great man!
Dear Katie and Family:
You may not remember me from Miami, but
I have many very pleasant memories of you and Paul when you first came to Miami and lived in Vets Village. He was a great coach and leader of so many football and athletic programs throughout his career. Most of all,
he was an outstanding person on and off the field.
Howard L.Luppi Class of 1848 Miami Univerity
Not long before Coach Dietzel came to Carolina I had read a story about his life in a book put out by FCA.I was a kid and overjoyed for him to come to my state and because of him I became a Gamecock fan. I listened to every game and a few times I wrote letters of encouragement and was overjoyed when he wrote back. He was my hero.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you ,his beloved family.
Thanks for the memories,
Many young men are living life because you showed them how. Eternal rest to you,COACH
Anne, Brad and I are so sad to hear that Coach has died! He was one of the nicest people we ever met and we are so proud to say that we knew him. Please know that we are praying for your family! Barbara and Brad Goodman

I live in the house Coach Dietzel built in Columbia, SC. We still have the Gamecock intercom speakers on the walls. My father, a doctor, has served as a sideline physician for many of the Gamecock's football games. We would like to purchase one of his paintings to hang on the wall inside this house. God bless you and rest in peace Coach Dietzel.
As a kid growing up in NJ, I was fascinated by the sound of the name..Billy Cannon of LSU. Paul Dietzel introduced me to the excitement of college football. A legend has passed on. RIP, Coach.

A special man, special coach, and a person who will greatly be missed. He left his mark on the University and will always be appreciated. God bless the coach and his family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Thank you for sharing Coach Dietzel with the Gamecock family.
My last year at the University of South Carolina was the best year for me. One big reason is that Steve Dietzel, Coach Dietzel's son, was one of my roommates. They are truly a wonderful family and I will never forget them.
As a long life Gamecock fan and a student when you were coach for 1 year of my college experience at USC I leave my prayers to your family. May you rest in peace in Gamecock Heaven and smile down on the team this Saturday as they continue their quest for an SEC title. All Gamecock fans will be think about you and your time as a coach at USC.
YOU JUMP STARTED THE COCKS AND WERE A GREAT LEADER

Coach Dietzel was a fine Christian man who I had the honor of playing for at Carolina for 5 years, during which I can not recall once hearing or seeing anything in him which led me to doubt his Christian testimony. That to me spoke to the character of the man which in the game of life counts more than one's record of wins and losses. Yet he had his share of wins, even today he is the only USC head football coach to record a conference championship, a fact I hope Coach Spurrier changes this year. Yet Coach Dietzel's influence at Carolina goes way beyond all that for he truly laid the groundwork for the facilities which have been built upon by Coaches Holtz and Spurrier. My condolences go out to his family.
A great man and a humble Christian. Thanks for the memories AND for your example.
I still remember selling drinks at Williams Brice Stadium and met Coach Dietzel several times. He was a great coach and a great man. He will be sorely missed.
To the family,
My prayers are with all of you. May the God of comfort be with you during this difficult time.
A Great Coach and a Great Man --He will be Missed -- Always a TIGER ! MAY HE REST IN PEACE !
As a lifelong Gamecock and 20+ year resident of the High Country of North Carolina (Beech Mountain) I seem to have always had a connection with Coach Dietzel. He did so much for the University and Columbia as a whole. Later he was a vibrant part of the Beech Mountain community where some of his art still hangs for sale in Fred's General Mercantile. I have always enjoyed knowing that Coach was a part of "both of my favorite places to be" - Columbia, South Carolina and Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
Rest in Peace, Coach. Prayers for the family.
In 1969 I was a new employee of the South Carolina National Bank. My department had several USC students working part time and they referred to coach Dietzel as Pepsident Paul. They loved him and I think, at the time, he was the King of Columbia, South Carolina. He was an extraordinary person.
