I read of Bob's death in the recent Drew alumni magazine. It seems like only yesterday that I worked in Bob's congressional office in Washington, D.C. It was a wonderful experience. I still remember Bob calling my Beverage. He was a good man and will be solely missed.

Mrs Edgar and family, please accept my condolences and prayers on your sudden loss.
My mother was deeply involved in Delaware county politics in the 70s and 80s. As a young teenager at that time I was not moved by the candidates usually on the ballot. That however quickly changed when I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Edgar. He was gracious, very bright and could easily command a room. He also demonstrated great empathy for those around him and those who needed help. It was a privilege to meet him and get in some ways to work and help in his campaigns. He gave me an understanding and template of what politics and public service could be. He will be missed.
We will keep Bob and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Mrs. Edgar,
I was a youngster when Pastor Bob came to Falls Methodist Church in Philadelphia. I was so fortunate to have him as our minister when I was confirmed into the church. I will always remember the confirmation activities and learning experiences while at Falls Methodist. It was a pleasure to have known Pastor Bob. He will be missed. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Merle and family, Bob's passing was a shock. He was such a good guy. We met at Lansdowne Methodist church. I so remember Bob telling me that, "Merle keeps me grounded". I'm sure Harry App was at heavens gate to meet him. Our prayers are with you all.
April 29, 2013
I am very sorry for your loss. May God be with the family during this time of grief and sorrow.
April 28, 2013
I met Bob through his older brother, Ralph, whom I had met at a summer camp for Methodist Church leaders. Bob would often tell the story of taking his driving test in my old car. As adults our paths grew apart but with Bob's entry into the public sphere I was often able to follow him.

Bob taught me an important lesson as a member of the Veteran's Affairs Committee of the House. Even if you detest the war you can still honor the warrior. In fact all too often those who favor the war the most are the ones who do not live up to their responsibility to the warriors. Bob was certainly not one of those.

Bob was one who was always on the side of those who rarely had many people standing with them. He was one of the good guys.

My sincere condolences to Merle, the family, and all who loved and respected him.

Bob made us believe that one person could make a difference in this world. Rest in peace.

I have only gotten to know Bob Edgar since leaving Congress myself. We frequently got together with the Former Democratic Members group, which Bob frequently hosted at Common Cause. Bob Edgar never stopped giving back and serving the public by trying to make our system more accountable. He probably already has a petition drive going in heaven!
April 27, 2013
As a Pennsylvania state legislator for 39 years, I have gotten to know many, many politicians. None was a finer human being than Bob Edgar.

I was with Bob the night before he was defeated for US Senator in 1986. He had to know that he was going to lose. But he was at his inspirational and upbeat best, exhorting 35th Ward Philadelphia Democrats to bring out the vote for all the right reasons.

I was one of many he appointed to his Presidential Advisory Panel for Common Cause in 2007. He wanted to bring Common Cause back to the cutting edge of politics, and he succeeded, tackling the influence of the Koch Brothers and the American Legislative Exchange Council.

I was there when he spoke up for my father's re-election campaign for City Council in 1987. My father was then 72 years old. "I want to be like David Cohen when I grow up," he said. Sadly, if growing up means being 72, he never made it. But he helped all of us grow up by showing the power of kindness, vision, and going step by step, year after year, decade after decade.

I was with Bob when he was exploring running for Senator in 1980, a race he ultimately decided not to run. He promised that if elected to the Senate then, he would be a leader there. More than 30 years later, it is clear he far exceeded his promise: he was a leader in our country.

Like so many others generally not known to each other, I will deeply miss Bob both personally and professionally. A meeting with him is on my calendar for early May. I will use that time to both reflect on our loss, and to reflect on the gratitude that we all should have for his long march to make our country and our institutions live up to their promise.

Bob jump started my political activism. Volunteering for his last two Congressional campaigns and being hired as a staff member for the Senatorial run, I then had it in my blood to continue. It was an absolute pleasure to work for him because his beliefs were right on and he never passed up the chance to thank his supporters. It just doesn't seem possible that he has left us so early. My heartfelt condolences to Merle, the boys and all the grandchildren. The world is a better place because of Bob Edgar.
April 26, 2013
Merle, Carol and I extend our sympathy to you and the children in the recent death of Bob. The memories are rich and many....the relationships continue to bring meaning and appreciation. You and your family will continue in our prayers. Peace, Drue Sherman

It was my privilege to work for Bob Edgar's fifth re-election campaign as an intern with Americans for Democratic Action. He was among the most authentic, ethical and committed individuals whom I have ever encountered, and he enriched the lives of everyone who was lucky enough to have met him. His was a life well-lived. He made a positive difference in every field of endeavor he undertook. He left us too soon. My sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and countless admirers.
April 26, 2013
I went to High School with Bob and spent some time with him at our 50th reunion just last year. He was an all around good guy in school, athlete and scholar with a friendly disposition. His remarkable career in politics and public leadership posts were a source of pride for all of us from his hometown. God speed Bob Edgar. His life was short but pretty amazing. Not a bad deal.

Bob was a kind and loving man who could instantly connect with people as evidenced at my birthday party a few years back. He gave Merle her own personal quilt gallery in his office, sharing her beautiful creativity with the world. May God continue to wrap His loving arms around the Edgar family during their time of grief.

Bob Edgar fought for decency. He displayed aspirational leadership in the Seventh District.
To the family- thank you for sharing him and for keeping the home fires burning while he tended to the public good

We offer our sincere sympathies to the Robert Edger family.

We came to know Robert Edger following our move from Evanston, Illinois to Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania in 1979. We worked on each of his campaigns during the ensuing years, and we followed his career after electoral politics. We so admired Bob's dedication to serving the public good in all his capacities of politics, church and public interest organizations. The world is richer for his life's contributions, and we are very saddened he has left his earthly grace too soon.

Sincerely,

Mark & Kenda Lundgren

Dear Merle, I am deeply shocked and saddened by Bob's untimely death. Please know that Rachel's and my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family in this most difficult time. Bob found so many effective ways to do God's work in both the secular and religious worlds and I have consciously tried to emulate him in the decades since I worked with him on Capitol Hill from 1977 - 1982. During that period when Bob served first as a founding Member and then as Democratic Co-Chairman of the bi-partisan Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition, he showed us all how to get the people's work done starting with high quality, non-partisan policy research followed by patient consensus-building across the political aisle and with often-contentious constituencies outside the Beltway. He was a vitally important mentor to me and countless other staff and Members - helping us all internalize and stay true down the years to a powerful moral compass. He has been and continues to be a huge inspiration to me and, I fervently hope, to us all. - Tom Cochran, Former Executive Director and Former Board Chair, Northeast-Midwest Institute

April 24, 2013
Three days before Christmas in 1979, Congressman Edgar drove from Washington to Drexel Hill, PA to marry my husband and me because my father had asked him to perform the ceremony. I couldn't believe he would go to so much trouble, especially right before Christmas & he said he did it because he thought the world of my father (Carl E. Mau of Media). I've never forgotten his kindness.

Bob was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever met. He was all those things. We came back on a train from Boston a few days after 9-11. Almost every piece of that conversation was about the future--not the past because Bob always thought you could fix the future.
