Walter Eugene Atkinson, 77, was born January 30, 1936, and passed away peacefully in W. Baldwin, Maine, on August 20, 2013.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Heer Mortuary & Crematory, 222 Cameron, Brush, CO 80723 for a viewing from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and a burial service performed by Reverend Phil Vogels will begin at the Brush, Colorado Cemetery at 1 p.m.
Walt was the youngest of 10 children born to Carey Ray and Irene Belle Atkinson and was raised on the well-known "Break-O-Day Ranch", south of Brush.
He exhibited a very agile and active mind and enjoyed playing football. He lettered in football and graduated from high school in 1954. He then entered Colorado A&M College on an athletic and academic scholarship.
He worked in the construction and oil industry and then moved into management at the Gates Rubber Company. He later accepted an opportunity as the General Manager of Engineered Data Products.
He married the beautiful Barbara Jean Neal on August 17, 1957. They had four children: Dawn Janean (Goble) Atkinson, Walter Troy Atkinson, Kelly (Lawler) Atkinson and Rhonda (Williams) Atkinson. Barbara passed away March 1, 1974.
No stranger to the dance floor or beautiful ladies, he married his second wife, "Miss Tall Colorado", Susan Piper on July 4, 1977. They had a son, Carey Walter Atkinson.
Walt is survived by his sister, Willie, and his four children, Troy, Kelly, Rhonda and Carey, as well as his former wife, Susan and three grandchildren, Daniel and Samuel Lawler, and Samantha Atkinson.
Walt enjoyed hunting, and fishing in Colorado, Wyoming, and Alaska and lived life to its fullest. Always on the go and always the center of attention, with plenty of stories and tall-tales to share.
He was a jack-of-all-trades and could accomplish anything he set his mind to. He cherished the love of family and friends and loved to say, "I never met a human I didn't like." He will be deeply missed.
Please send communication and condolences to: Rhonda Williams, 508 Pequawket Trail West Baldwin, ME 04091.
