Robert McCaffrey Obituary

Robert Eugene McCaffrey was born on the family farm near Otis to Francis and Alberta McCaffrey. He left this earth to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at the age of 78.

Robert was the youngest of five boys. After losing his mom in 1936, the family moved north of Vona. He attended the Boger country school and later attended Vona High School where he graduated in 1952.

After graduation he attended Colorado A&M (CSU) for one year. During his year at Colorado A&M he was active in ROTC and later in the National Guard for two years.

On June 1, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart Mary Olive Jackson, the woman he called his bride until the day he passed. To this union two sons were born, Bert Eugene in 1957 and Daniel Lee in 1960.

Robert and Mary resided in Vona for five months before moving to their farm 14 miles north of Seibert, where they currently reside.

Along with his 45 years of farming, he enjoyed playing competitive horseshoes and won the state tournament in 1991. He also enjoyed playing snooker, a good game of pitch or poker, and he never met a pitch hand that he wouldn't bid on. He also enjoyed an occasional trip to Black Hawk for a day of gambling.

After his stroke in 1999 he continued to be a dedicated fan of the Hi-Plains ball teams. He always found a way to con somebody into taking him to these games – you know who you are.

Robert "Bobby" was a great friend to everyone he came in contact with and he never knew a stranger. He will always be remembered as a father figure and someone who would lend a listening ear.

Robert was preceded in death by his mother, father, and stepmother, Hazel; brothers, Darrell and Kenneth; brothers-in-law, Dale Keith, Rod Morberg, Vaughn Monroe and Paul Jackson; and sisters-in-law, Betty Monroe and Shirley Jackson.

He is survived by his wife Mary of 58 years; his sons, Bert (Mary) and Daniel (Lori); brothers, Francis (Neva) and Wayne (Fern); sisters-in-law, Pauline McCaffrey, Ethel McCaffrey, Anna Belle Keith and Virgene Morberg.

Also surviving are his four grandchildren, Candice Johnson, Sean McCaffrey, Brittany (Scott) Witzel and Nathan (Emily) McCaffrey; great-grandchildren, Cierra, Braiden and Ashton Johnson as well as his very special uncle and aunt Bob and Mary Lisle and many special cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Seibert Community Building in Seibert with Pastor Bob Strauch officiating.

Burial followed in the Seibert Cemetery, Seibert. Visitation was held on Sunday, March 17, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Love Funeral Home in Burlington.
