TONY LAFAYETTE - BURLINGTON - Anthony "Tony" Joseph Lafayette, 61, passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, surrounded by his family, after participating in one final game of cribbage. He fought a courageous battle with cancer. Tony was a graduate of Rice Memorial High School and Vermont Technical College. He loved sports, playing baseball and basketball in high school and collegiately. He passed on this knowledge, coaching countless youth teams through Little League, CYO and Parks and Rec. Additional accomplishments include, retiring as the career leader in assists at VTC, pitching a no-hitter in men's softball, hitting a hole-in-one at Williston Country Club, and induction into the Vermont Softball Hall of Fame. He remained a lifelong Burlingtonian, a city in which he took great pride and started a family. Tony will be remembered for his incredible devotion to his family and the local community. He was an active board member at The Boys and Girls Club and The Burlington International Games. As founder of Lafayette Real Estate, he enjoyed nothing more than managing his apartments, meeting new people and discussing the next business deal (the last of which he closed on November 30th). Never one to forget a face or without a moment to stop and chat, he rarely left home without brightening someone else's day. In later years, he was a self-proclaimed fishing addict, always discussing "the one that got away." A perfect night would be spent with friends and family playing cards, pool and ping pong. Son of Leonard and Marie, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Melissa; and his children, Chris of New York, Jenna and her wife, Kimberly, of Rhode Island, Brian of New York, and Eric of Burlington. He also leaves behind his siblings, Diane, Mark, Carol and Pat, Peter and Roberta, Paul, Marty and Mary Lou, Maria, and Monica. In addition, he leaves many loved ones, including 89 nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held at Ready Funeral Home, 261 Shelburne Road, today, Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass a Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Burlington, with burial at a later date. Online condolences may be made at www.readyfuneral.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Burlington, a charity that Tony cared deeply about, located at 62 Oak Street, Burlington, VT 05401.

Tony was a jewel in the Queen City's crown. Just learning this sad news, Diane and I wish to send Melissa and the wonderful Lafayette Family our heartfelt sympathies. The powerful Mets of North Burlington Little League were only one example of Tony's commitment to Burlington's youth. He will long be remembered as an inspiration.
