Peter Lougheed

I would just like you to know that Peter is one of my heroes. I was at U of C studying petroleum economics when Peter fought the infamous NEP battle and preserved our rights as Albertans. He was one of the greatest statesmen to ever serve our country as evidenced his work with Quebec and the help he gave Newfoundland when they needed it as they helped us during the depression by sending us fish. I thank you for your sacrifices as a family for the time that he spent protecting his beloved Alberta. Mike Stone

To the family, I wish to extend my sincere condolences on your loss and fond memories of a man many admired. Mr. Loughheed was a great statesman, a visionary and profound thinker that led Albertans through a very tough political climate in Canada. We owe this great Albertan a great deal.

For those of us who lived in Alberta in the late 70's Mr. Lougheed was a visionary leader. Alberta and its citizens owe him our deepest respect and gratitude.

My prayers go to his family at this time. Alberta and Canada are better off because of what he did during his life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Lougheed many years ago when I rented a car to him. He was so gracious and thankful for every option offered him that now, more than 20 years later, I think of him as one of the kindest people I have ever met. If we all would conduct ourselves in the same manner in our daily lives, the world would truly be a better place.

My deepest sympathy to Peter's family, he was a great Canadian, who made a difference, and will be missed!

All the beautiful tributes to your beloved Peter are so true. I knew him in school, Central High. I have read all other years of his life covered and no doubt these years have been too. If I may I would like to tell you why they are special to me.

I can still see him coming down the hall, books on his hip, always a smile on his face and a friendly hi or hello to everyone he met (whether he knew them or not).
He was extra special to me! I was a shy country girl from a two room school and suddenly there were 300 or more students. I was in a trigonometry class with a very rare teacher, Mr. Asselstine. He called on me to give my answer and asked how I reached it. I gave it and he immediately went into a rage and told me I just made it “too complicated”. Needless to say I was completely humiliated. He turned his back to show us “how” and Peter whispered to me to meet him in spare in the Library. In about ten minutes he taught me more about trigonometry then Mr. Asselstine had taught me in three months. Without that help I would have undoubtedly failed.
I had the good fortune to accidentally meet Peter again at the Foothills Hospital. There were two of us ladies in the waiting room. One was crocheting and I was quilting when Peter came in and true to character began a conversation. First with the other lady and then with myself. We exchanged a few words and I said I remembered him but he wouldn't remember me to which he replied “no I'm sorry I don't”. When I said we had gone to school together he said “where” and I told him Central. He said well you're just the person I was looking for. “How many students were there then?” he asked. I said “I don't know for sure but I would say 300 to 350.” “That's just what I thought” he said enthusiastically, “now I can tell my kids I met someone else that agreed with me.”
He was called in then and after a cordial good bye he was gone.

I was so happy to have had the opportunity to tell him “thank you”. It is just one more of the multitude of little things that Peter was famous for. I know that I will be one of the millions of people who will miss, but never forget what a wonderful person he was.

Our sincere condolences to the entire Lougheed family. Mr. Lougheed was a proud Canadian who stood up for Alberta with integrity and civility. He was strong but also gracious and was a true visionary. He will be greatly missed. Although I did not know him personally, I felt his impact in my life with his wise political decisions and always respected him.
