Richard was a tower of strength in whichever of the several capacities he served the forest industries - calm, dispassionate, thoughtful and resolute, with a wry sense of humour that never failed him. He will be sorely missed by the industry, his many friends and colleagues, and most of all, by his family. Belatedly, I offer my sincere condolences to his family, and my assurances that the very high regard in which I held Richard as a colleague and friend, remain un-dimmed.

Richard was a friend and recent work colleague during the years I was involved in the forestry sector. He was the most insightful and helpful person I worked with in the forestry arena, with an amazing ability to cut to the chase on complex issues, quickly finding the smartest way to progress things.
As a felow cyclist, I greatly enjoyed our banter over the minutiae of all things cycling and endurance sports, even when he'd describe my pride and joy triathlon bike as a 'girls bike'.
They were good times mate, and you will always be remembered. Ride the eternal tailwind now.

Richard and I worked together when he was with APIC, through the A3P years, and then briefly when he joined AFS. He was a tireless advocate for the forest industry, open and honest, smart yet humble, always enjoyable to work with, and a committed family man. We shared a passion for cycling but never managed to ride together. The tragic news last week was a shock. Our world would indeed be a better place if more shared his attributes. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was fortunate to live at Bruce Hall at the same time as Richard back in the 80's. "Roge", as he was known by those living at the Hall, was as committed to Forestry & sustainability then as he was at the time of his passing. I recall a sweet and sincere young man whose determined and gentle soul endeared him to many. Deepest sympathy to Sonia, Emma, Julia, his family and many friends.

My memories of Richard began during the 2003 Canberra bushfires and his detailed account of his experience amongst a lecture theatre of green fourth year forestry students. As time goes on Richard has always offered warm and friendly contact, and mentored younger generations in our industry. A tragic loss to society, industry, and most importantly his family.

What a gift to have known Richard.
A generous spirit, fierce intellect, astute political mind and a dry (often wicked) sense of humour, I never finished a conversation with him without having learned something new and having had a good laugh.
He never saw a policy he couldn't improve. In one of our recent conversations he asked about a policy proposal I had been working on for several weeks. It had nothing to do with forestry, but it still only took him 3 minutes to dismantle my whole argument. I still laugh when I remember how expertly, ruthlessly but gently he demolished me. Of course, in true Richard fashion he then humbly offered his opinion on how I could re-frame my position. And while I still have my franticly written notes from that conversation, trying to capture Richard's intellect and nuanced positioning on a piece of paper is not easy.
How lucky Australia's forests were to have him on their side.
My sincere condolences to Richard's family.

I was saddened to hear of Richard's untimely passing. I lived at the same Uni college as Richard and have a fond memory of an epic 2-night "Inward Bound" adventure in the forests west of Canberra with Richard, or Roger as we knew him then. I recall that we were one of only two teams that finished the course, which was a feather in young Richard's cap.

I was shocked and saddened to read of Richard's untimely death. I was one of his lecturers at the ANU Department of Forestry in 1986 and 1987. It was during our field practicals and excursions in forest mensuration and inventory that I came to know him well. He was an exemplary student, intelligent, resourceful, always courteous and well behaved, and well liked and respected by all. His passing is indeed a great loss to the forestry profession. I extend my sincere condolences to his wife and family.

Not surprisingly Richard was a man of great integrity, intellect and a fine forester. Since I joined the Office of Senator Colbeck, we have been in regular contact and the conversation inevitably drifts to cycling and family. He was also a great support when I was President of the IFA. Sonia and girls you should be so proud of him as he was of you. His family always came first. He will be missed but never forgotten.
